Yis in Yunnan have a population of 4,705,700 who are the descendants of the ancient Di-Qiang ethnic group living 6,000~7,000 years ago in Northwest China. Most of Yis in Yunnan live in Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture in West Yunnan and Honghe Hani-Yi Autonomous Prefecture in South Yunnan. Yis have their own spoken and written languages. The traits of Yi culture are revealed in the worship of tiger, fire, force and black color. The Ten-Month Solar Calendar of Yi Nationality is regarded as an equal of the world-famous Maya civilization.
The Torch Festival: The Carnival of Yi Nationality
This grand festival is held at night from July 24th to July 24th on the lunar calendar. When night falls, Yis in groups will walk to neighboring villages, carrying torches with rosin powder and exchanging good wishes. Yis in Lunan and Guishan will play their three-stringed musical instrument and dance in their own styles, and wrestling and bullfighting are very popular with them. Yis in Chuxiong and Mile will also hold the traditional fire-worship ceremony.
The Costume Festival: A Fashion Show of Yi Girls
This festival is held at Zhiju Village of Yongren County on January 15th and at Santai Township of Dayao County on March 28th in Chuxiong Prefecture.
This festival offers a golden opportunity for Yi lads and lasses to express their love. The Yi girls like to embody their skills in their own embroidered clothes.
Da Performance: The Most Popular Folk Dance
During the marriage ceremony, a harvest or festival, Yis, numbering from scores of people to one thousand, will dance around the burning bonfires and to their own musical instruments. Holding the hands of the opposite sex and stamping on the ground, they will dance in an anticlockwise way the whole night. It has been proved that this dance became popular in the Han and the Tang Dynasty in central and south China. In 1986, The American Association of International Folk Arts included this dance in the top-ten most popular folk dances of the world.
The Ten-Month Solar Calendar of Yi Nationality: An Equal to Maya Civilization
Yis have kept up their old Ten-Month Solar Calendar which has a history of ten thousand years. This indicates that Chinese civilization emerged earlier than Egyptian civilization, Indian civilization or Babylonian civilization. Yi’s Sky-facing Tomb which is closely related to its solar calendar was a kind of astronomical observatory in the past.
"Climbing to the Boudoir": A Typical Yi Marriage Custom
"Climbing to the Boudoir” is a typical Yi custom. When a Yi girl is 16, her parents will build a grass-roofed small house of her own. A Yi boy who is over 20 and in love with her can “climb up” to this boudoir. If they both are satisfied, they can get the permission from their parents for marriage.
"Tiao-Cai": A Dance-like Style of Serving Yi Dishes
This unique style is regarded as the most respectful one popular with Yis in Wuliang Mountain and Ailao Mountain, which reveals Yi dietary culture combining dance, music with acrobatics. The beating of gongs ushers in the singing of Yi girls and two Yi boys carrying two plates (24 bowls) on their heads and arms. They dance to the folk music, and with humorous actions put each dish in order on the table.
Yi Earthen House: A Unique Style
A Yi earthen house looks much like the Tibetan stone-house but its walls are made of earth which is beaten hard while being built. Its flat roof is also used for drying things. Most of such houses are found in central and southeast Yunnan. This house consists of 3~5 rooms. The central room has a fire-pit which is the gathering spot both for the family members and guests.

The Naxi is a minority with a long history and a brilliant culture. With a population of 300,000, this group mainly live in Yulong County, Lijiang City of Yunnan Province. It has become known worldwide for having kept its own ancient and unique Dongba Culture and thus claimed to be a small group that has created a grand culture.
The Dongba Culture or the traditional Naxi Culture, derived its name from the Dongba scriptures preserved in the Dongba hieroglyphic language. Dongba scriptures are classics of the Dongba religion which, characterized as worship of ancestor and nature, was based on the Naxi primitive religion integrating cultural factors from the Han, the Tibetan and other nationalities.
Initially created in the Tang Dynasty, the Dongba writing has a history of over 1,000 years; phonetically it is articulated in the Naxi vernacular as "Sijiu Lujiu" meaning to paint woods and stones just as they are seen. This pictographic language came to be called the Dongba language since it was employed to write down scriptures by Dongba of the religion; based on ideographic symbols, this language also takes in some phonographic loan characters and diacritics.
"Dongba scriptures", as the name suggests, means scriptures written in the Dongba language. The existent Dongba scriptures add up to approximately 20,000 fascicules of more than 1,500 types, involving such fields as philosophy, history, religion, medicine, astronomy, folklore, literature and art. In addition to the abundant records about inviting gods and driving away ghosts, about praying for happiness and longevity and about warding off calamities and disasters, there are a 1arge number of ancient literary works of the Naxi people, such as fairy tales, narrative epics, proverbs and ballads. The most well known are the creation epic Genesis, the heroic epic War between White and Black, and the tragic epic Migration of Herdsmen, which are called the three major Naxi epics and acclaimed as the three pearls in Dongba literature. Dongba scriptures are, therefore, also nicknamed as encyclopedias of the Naxi ancient society.
Many other countries have built their own collections of Dongba scriptures, for instance, the U.S.,the U.K., France, Japan, Germany, Italy and Austria. In the U.S. alone, the collection in the Library of Congress plus that in Harvard Library numbers over 4,000 volumes. In China, Dongba scriptures have been collected by the Library of Yulong County, the Library of Yunnan Province, China National Library, the Library of Central Nationalities University, and libraries in Taiwan.
For better protection, research and development of the Dongba Culture, in1984 the Naxi Dongba Cultural Museum was founded at the Black Dragon Pool of Lijiang. The museum has more than 10,000 Dongba cultural relics and various other historical relics and offers the "Dongba Culture Exhibition", thereby attracting more than 100,000 visitors each year; meanwhile, it also compiles and publishes Newsletter of Dongba Culture and has established the Lijiang Naxi Dongba Cultural School; for its outstanding work over the past years, this museum has been rated as one of the ten excellent prefectural and county museums in China, awarded the honor of "Advanced Cultural Unit in China", and listed as one of the bases for patriotism education of the province.

The Nanzhao-Dali Culture
During the Tang and Song dynasties (960-1279 A.D), local cultures developed successively around Er'hai Lake in the kingdoms of Nanzhao (748-902) and Dali (937-1253) over a period of more than 500 years, another culmination in the cultural history of Yunnan.
...During the Tang and Song dynasties (960-1279 A.D), local cultures developed successively around Er'hai Lake in the kingdoms of Nanzhao (748-902) and Dali (937-1253) over a period of more than 500 years, another culmination in the cultural history of Yunnan.
Between the 7th and 8th centuries, the Mengshe Kingdom and other five kingdoms as well as the Xi' erhe Ethnic Group formed in the vicinity of Er'hai Lake. All inhabitants in these kingdoms ethnically belonged to the Wuman (ancestors of the Yi) and, due to its location in the south of the kingdoms, the Mengshe Kingdom was historically known as the Kingdom of Nanzhao (Southern tribe, Zhao refers to tribe). In order to deal with the Tibetan regime, the Tang government attempted to support the rising Mengshe Kingdom in the southwestern frontier and even helped it to annex the other five kingdoms and the Xi'erhe Group.
During the Kaiyuan Period (712-742) of Emperor Xuanzong, Piluoge, King or chieftain of the Mengshe Kingdom gradually unified the districts surrounding Erhai Lake and in the 26th year of that period (738 A.D), he was crowned by Emperor Xuanzong as King of Yunnan with a royal title "Guiyi", indicating that the Nanzhao Kingdom was finally established; the following year witnessed the shift of the capital of the kingdom to Taihe (a town south of Dali), and the political center of Yunnan at that time was accordingly shifted from Qujing to Dali. The territory of the kingdom, approximately one and a half times larger than that of the present Yunnan Province, included the whole province of Yunnan, West Guizhou, Southwest Sichuan, and even parts of Myanmar, Laos and Thailand. It was ruled by 13 kings with Xinuluo as its first king and lasted for 250 years until its termination in the year 902 A.D.
After the termination of Nanzhao came three transit dynasties, namely the Great Changhe Kingdom, the Great Tianxing Kingdom, and the Great Yining Kingdom, which together lasted for merely 36 years; during this period, the power of the noble Baiman kept rising steadily. From 937 A.D when the Kingdom of Dali was founded by Duan Siping, a Baiman aristocrat, to 1253 A.D when it was exterminated by Kublai Khan, the Dali Kingdom lasted for 316 years under successive reigns of 22 kings with a territory almost as large as that of the Kingdom of Nanzhao. Therefore, the kingdoms of Nanzhao and Dali existed at almost the same time as the Tang and Song dynasties did in the Central China.

Overland drive with seat in public bus from Kunming to Dali, 360 kilometers, or about 4.5 hours.
Standing against the Cangshan Mountains in the west and adjoining the Erhai Lake in the east, embraced by undulating hills around, Dali was the capital of Nanzhao and Dali Kingdom as early as 1,300 years ago. It is home to Bai minority.
Upon arrival in Dali, proceed to visit the Three Pagodas, followed by a guided stroll in Dali old town.
Standing in a way of a tripod on the outskirts of old town, the Three Pagodas were constructed in about 850 and 1050 following the model of the Small Wild Goose Pagoda in Xi’an. For centuries, they are considered landmark of the region.
The Dali Old Town of weathered gray granite stands at 2,100 meters on a long, narrow rice plain between the Cangshan Mountains and the Erhai Lake, a natural configuration that seems specially designed for a good, bountiful life. Format of the old town is like a chessboard with four gates guarding in the directions of east, south, west and north, a design that was adopted by most towns in ancient China.

A gathering place of rugged mountain people with the Naxi forming the majority, Lijiang is a small mountain town of stone and tile, laced with swift canals, which was enlisted as an UNESCO World Cultural Heritage in 1999.

It enjoys a long history of over 800 years and unlike most of the old towns in China, there is no city walls due to a superstitious belief of the local ruler whose family name is Mu (tree), when encircled by walls, would be Kun (besieged). • Day 6 Lijiang - Shangri-La (by automobile)
We drive to Shangri-La with stops and visits to the First Bend of the Yangzi River and the Tiger Leaping Gorge on the way.
The village of Stone Drum stands at the First Bend of the Yangzi River, some 70 kilometers west of Lijiang. Approaching to Stone Drum offers a dramatic view of the Yangzi's near-180-degree turn, where the wide, swift waters perform a miraculous about-face. For nearly 20 kilometers the river, first flowing south, then north, runs parallel to itself. Locals say if it were not for their village standing guard at the bend, China would lose the water of the Yangzi to Southeast Asia, like that of the adjacent Mekong and Salween Rivers.
The Tiger Leaping Gorge, or Hutiaoxia in Chinese, is the Yangzi's best-known gorge after the Three Gorges in Sichuan and Hubei. Wedged tightly between titanic cliffs, the river is so narrow here, as legend tells us, that a hunted tiger made his escape to the other side in a single bound. Here, the Jade Dragon Snow Mountains and the Haba Snow Mountains lean close to each other and a large volume of torrent moving between them cutting deeper and deeper into the bottom of the gorge. In some places there is a drop of 3,000 meters to the water.
Arrive Shangri-La in the late afternoon, check in at hotel.
