Also known as the "Venice of Hong Kong", Tai O is a popular tourist destination for foreigner visitors and locals alike. One of the main features of Tai O are the pang uks, a kind of stilt house, built right over the waterway.
A rope bridge (hand-pulled ferry) tended by local women used to be quite popular, but it has been replaced with a more practical steel pedestrian bridge in 1996.
The Chinese Pink Dolphin lives in the waters off Tai O, and tourists can go on a short boat trip to watch these animals out in the sea.

The A-Ma Temple is situated on the southwest tip of Macau Peninsula. It is one of the oldest and best known Taoist temples in Macau. The temple was built in 1488, and is dedicated to Matsu, the goddess of seafarers and fishermen. This deity is more commonly known as Tin Hau in neighbouring Hong Kong.
The name Macau is thought to come from the name of this temple. When the Portuguese first landed just outside the temple they asked the name of the place, upon which the natives replied "媽閣" ("Maa1 Gok3"). The Portuguese sailors then named the peninsula Macao.
In 2005, the temple became listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
