Liaoning Province Attractions

Jia Bar

The Jia Bar (officially named Lan Gui Fang Jiu Ba) is supposed to mimic the super-trendy bars in Hong Kong’s  Lan Kwai Fong district. The trendy atmosphere doesn’t always match the people inside, but it’s an interesting place nonetheless. Two dance floors are sometimes complemented by a Western DJ playing a mix of techno and hip-hop.  For those intending to dance the night away, don’t plan on drinking water for hydration; this bar only sells miniature bottles of Evian for 30(it should be a crime). If feeling parched, go outside, turn right and buy a normal sized bottle of water for 1元.

Food: Jia bars serves pretty good food including a fairly unique selection for Shenyang (pizza, tacos, etc.)

Price: Beers from 20 yuan, cocktails around 30.  Most dishes are 25-50 yuan.

How to Get There: Near the corner of Taiyuan shopping street (太原街) and zhōng huá lù (中华路), directly across from Trader’s Hotel (商贸饭店,shāng mào fàn diàn).

Sophie's World Bar

       Until recently, this small laid-back pub was the most popular stop for many of Shenyang’s Westerners. Over the past couple years however, Sophie’s has lost some of its popularity, partially due to the addition of new bars around town....

Tai Qing Gong

Tai Qing Gong is a Taoist temple originally built by the Qing dynasty emperor Kangxi in 1663. However, it didn’t receive its current name until 1779. The temple is not large, and visitors may only spend about 20-30 minutes inside, but some of the designs and painting on the ex...

Location: The temple is on the west side of Xi Shun Cheng Jie (西顺城街) near the corner of Bei Shun Cheng Lu (北顺城路). It is 1 km east of Government Square, and 1 km west of Middle Street. Ask a taxi driver for “tài qīng gōng”.

Dongling Park and Fuling Tomb

Fuling Tomb (福陵) is located inside Dongling Park (东陵公园), and along with Zhaoling and Yongling is one of Shenyang’s three famous tombs. The tomb is similar to Zhaoling Tomb in Beiling Park, but smaller. It was built in 1651 by the early Qing Dynasty emperor Shunzhi (顺治) as a resting place for his grandfather Nurhachi and his mistress. Subsequent emperors Qianlong (乾隆) and Kangxi (康熙) also added buildings and adornments to the shrine, and made periodic visits here to honor their ancestors.

The park is located in a forested area overlooking the Hun River (浑河), and is a pleasant place to take a half-day away from the city. To make the most of your time, consider visiting nearby Ocean World or Botanical Gardens in the same day.

Cost: Entry to the tomb is 30 yuan.

Location: 8 km east of Shenyang, the park is approximately 45 minutes from the city center by bus. A taxi will probably cost around 60 yuan. Take the 168 (formerly 330) bus from Ma Lu Wan or Da Shuai Fu, or take the 218 bus from the Imperial Palace.

Take bus 148, 168, 168, 218, 330, 385 to get there.

The Shenyang Ocean World (actually located outside of Shenyang), was recently opened in 2006 around the same time as the World Horticultural Exhibition. Ocean World features a large “walk-through” aquarium with a variety of fish, sharks, turtles, rays, and much more. The aquarium also boats a sea lion show, a small reptile garden, a beluga whale, and perhaps the most amazing attraction…a mermaid show.

For those in Shenyang simply seeking something to do, it’s worthwhile to make the trip to Ocean World. Also, construction is already underway on new attractions, so it can only get better in the future.

Cost: 80 yuan per person.

How to get there:  There are four ways to get there:
--take a train from the north station or the south station (get off at the WORLD EXPO);
--take a taxi for around 100 yuan;
--there is one special charter leaving at 9am everyday from each of the following locations:
