Hunan Provincial Museum

Hunan Provincial Museum is located on No. 50, Dongfeng Lu, Changsha City, next to the Revolutionary Martyr's Park. It covers an area of 50,000 square meters (about 12.2 acres) with a construction area of 20,000 square meters (about 4.9 acres). First built in 1951, the museum was open to the public in July 1974. It has gathered together most curios unearthed in Hunan Province, unfolding the cultural development of Hunan Province throughout thousands of years.

This museum has a collection of more than 110,000 objects, over 763 of which are top grade cultural relics. Most of these objects were discovered by archaeological excavation. What's more, the museum has gathered together nearly all the fine works unearthed in different parts of Hunan Province. According to the various textures, the cultural relics in Hunan Provincial Museum can be classified into the following kinds: bronze, silk paintings and books, lacquers, textiles, ceramics, paintings and calligraphy. These cultural relics include stone implements and pottery from the Neolithic Age, bronze wares of the Shang Dynasty (16th - 11th century BC) and Zhou Dynasty (11th - 221 BC), and celadon wares from the Eastern Han Dynasty (25 - 220) to the Sui Dynasty (581 - 618) and the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907). Some masterpieces by famous scholars like Wang Xizhi, a famous calligrapher from the Tang Dynasty, and Wang Fuzhi, a great philosopher of the late Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644) and the early Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1911) are also on display. Cultural relics unearthed in Mawangdui Han Tombs are the highlights in the museum.

The following cultural relics unearthed in Mawangdui Han Tombs are highly recommended because of the amazement they have brought to people. The first one is the tomb and corpse of Xin Zhui, circa 2,000 years ago, which is well preserved. Her skin is moist and her organs are still well protected, even after having been unearthed for more than 30 years. The second relic is a T-shaped colored silk painting. It is not only still intact but also has gorgeous color. The contents of this painting are various, giving you a full picture of lives in the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC - 24). The third one is a plain gauze garment. It is about 128 centimeters (about 4.2 feet) long but only weighs 48 grams (about 1.7 ounces). This garment is perhaps the most significant, because it proves the existence of very advanced textile technology in the Han Dynasty (206BC - 220) when China was called 'the country of silk'.

Mawangdui Han Tombs

The tombs followed a mixture of Western Han Dynasty and Chu burial practices. The tombs were made of large cypress planks. The outside of the tombs were layered with white clay and charcoal; white clay layering was a practice that originated with Chu burials, while charcoal layering was a practice that was followed during the early western Han Dynasty in the Changsha area. The tombs contained nested lacquered coffins, a Chu burial custom. The tombs also followed the burial practices dictated by Emperor Wen of Han, containing no jade or precious metals. Changsha, the capital of Hunan Province: Continuing support for ecology, ancient legacy

About 42 percent of the urban area is now covered by trees and grass.
Efforts in both development and ecological protection in Changsha continue as the city government launches a new round of initiatives, said a top official.
"With a profound cultural foundation and unique landscape, the city in Central China's Hunan province will be built into a modern metropolis with greater internationalization," said Yi Lianhong, Party chief of Changsha.
He also noted the government plans to design and develop the downtown area with a global outlook, the world perspective and high standards.
At this year's UN Conference on Sustainable Development in June, Changsha was named to the list of Global Green Cities. The city's forest coverage has surpassed 53 percent. About 42 percent of its urban area is now covered by trees and grass.
Giving priority to ecological values is a principle the city government has long emphasized, though its industries do not lag behind in development.
The city's industrial expansion is selective. The local environmental watchdogs shut down or transformed more than 1,000 companies due to heavy pollution and excessive energy consumption.
And it heavily supports and promotes the development of the creative industry as well.
During the massive and rapid process of urbanization, the city government has not sacrificed mountains, original vegetation and other property given by the nature to pursue the rising figures in the city's GDP graphs.
Many large ecological parks were built based on their original landforms and are now among the largest in the country.
Yanghu Wetland Park, the largest of its kind in central and southern China, covers 702 hectares. The local government has spent 5.5 billion yuan ($898 million) on improvements and amenities.
The park has its original ecological environment, water and vegetation. It also has passages for bird and other animal migration.
Juzi Island Park in the Xiangjiang River is another highlight of the city's tourism. The park cost about 1.7 billion yuan to develop.
What impresses visitors most is an enormous statue of a young Mao Zedong, a Hunan native.
Chairman Mao's image means a lot to many people. In Changsha, the 32-meter-tall sculpture inspires visitors with Mao as an example of turning ideals into reality.
Other scenery highlights with peach and plum blossoms, bamboo and orange trees, which are also popular destinations for sightseeing and taking pictures.
To date, the city has nine State-level ecological demonstration zones and 14 natural reserves of various types.
And, due to its varieties of flowers and trees along main roads and in important areas, "the city appears as if it is in a perpetual state of springtime", said officials.

Golden Whip Brook (Golden Whip Stream) - Huangshi Village (Yellow Stone Village)

Huangshi Village lies to the west of Zhangjiajie Forest Park with an altitude of 1200m and covers an area of 250mu. We will take a cable car to go up there. You can enjoy the Six Strange Pagoda, Picking Star Platform, Five Finger Peak, Lover peaks and so on when you are on the top of mountain. Golden Whip Brook is Located in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, covers a distance of 7.5km from north to south, winding across mountains and valleys. The brook is limpid through the year, with many scenic spots along the way. It is famous for Jinbian Cave-which has a height of 382km and looks like a huge flying eagle. Go back Changsha at 3:00pm ( estimated arriving time is 9:30pm )
