My wife and I flew back to our home in Lisbon (Portugal) from Iran/Persia a few days ago where we spent eleven wonderful days! We had an amazing trip by car with our private guide Moein Gholami throughout this vast country almost three times the size of France, from its huge capital Tehran with roughly 15 million inhabitants to the Southern city of Shiraz in a total road trip of 900 km. Iran exceeded our expectations and is a very safe country ! Just after a couple of days we realized that Iranians are not religious-fanatics at all. With the help of our excellent guide and travel companion Moein Gholami who spoke perfect English we were able to discover a beautiful land of contrasts where the people are very friendly and eager to meet foreign visitors specially Europeans. It’s filled with a rich culture blended through thousands of years, ancient or traditional and modern architecture, rich traditional Persian cuisine and sweets, unique and colorful bazaars in every city and so much more. Towards the end of our journey we reached the famous Persepolis the former capital of the mighty Persian Empire founded by Darius the Great in 522 BC, a World Heritage site located close to Shiraz. Although Persepolis was burnt to the ground by Alexander the Great and his army in 330 BC the ruins of many of its palaces, gates, stairways etc are still in very good condition. We were delighted to have our friend guide Moein drive us around and bring us to many of his favorite places and monuments in small towns or big cities like Tehran, Kashan, Abyaneh, Isfahan, Yazd and Shiraz and help us with our shopping and choice of menus !
