A cafe is a place which usually serves hot coffee, and coffee beverages, tea, other hot beverages and some suitable snacks. Some coffee houses also serve cold drinks such as iced tea and iced coffee.

One such coffee outlet is Cali Cafe at Rochester Park Avenue hotel in Singapore. Like a normal cafe & restaurant Cali cafe was having their food served manually via waiters, but with the rise in technology, Cali has come up with a new mode of serving food, that is via robots.The talking robot who serves the food without any external help once it gets calibrated.

Taking the orders and delivering the food was an easy task which requires immediate attention but on the other hand is boring too. To handle this problem, Cali Cafe has launched a robot “Cobie”, which is a perfect waiter for the cafe. The four-wheeled robots are four feet tall, weigh about 10 kgs and travel at 10 KM per hour.

•    Serves food to the hotel rooms.

•    It can call on to the customer's phone and inform about food.

•    It understands the infrastructure of the hotel.

•    And preventing collision with a human or a material object.

How Cobie Works?

1.    First, you select the room number by typing on the screen.

2.    Then you load food into compartments of the robot.

3.    Wait for few seconds for the information to be processed and off the robot goes delivering the food to hotel rooms.

The robot was on trial for a year before becoming a permanent feature of the eatery since the start of 2017.

Cobie uses driverless technology and has sensors to prevent it from knocking into obstacles. It was also calibrated to deal with the infrastructures in the hotel. It can even ring up the phone to the customer to inform him that food has arrived.

Cobie was set to use in the cafe on 5th March 2017, in their ROCHESTER DRIVE cafe branch. The day was started with a party, and the guests included the customers, the managerial staff and Mr.TeoSer Luck who is a currently a Minister of State at the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Mayor of the North East District of Singapore.

At the event, Mr.TeoSer Luck (Minister of State at the Ministry of Trade and Industry) said, “I think it’s a good experience and euphoric to see using technology is helpful, and with the manpower saving, you can add more resources to the places where you need more attention. This has been very helpful and as a good example for cafe of a smaller size to consider. Technology must be easier to use, easy to integrate and also easy to implement then only it would be successful to reduce the burden from manpower.”

“Cobie” the food delivering robot is manufactured by a local Singaporean company called Techmetrics Solutions who are manufacturers of technical and robotic components.

On inquiring with the staff, they felt relaxed because they can now focus on other activities like cooking the food, improving the interiors and cleaning the interiors.
