Nujiang

Originated from one peak of Himalayas, Nujiang River (known as the Angry River) roars all the way down to Yunnan, without any bending or turning, it runs out of China, directly into the lower land of Myanmar, then the Indian Ocean. Surrounded by the Biluo and Baimang Snow Mountains by the two sides, villages are almost squeezing for survival space along the river. It doesn't matter which group they are from, Lisu People, Nu People, and Dulong People, all have darker skin and high nose, and they all go to catholic churches on Sunday. Sub Tropical along the river in summer, couldn't imagina the whole area got frozen and closed down in the long winter time. The high mountains, and the long long river, that's it. But What a mysterious land, what an isolated world, keeps on drawing people's heart to explore it.

Historically, culturally and geographically, northwest Yunnan is one of the most diverse and alluring destinations in China. Our purpose for this adventure was to explore a short trail leading up and over Biluo Snow Mountain (碧罗雪山) in Fugong County (福贡县) with trekking guide and friend Hongxing — a Tibetan Catholic from Cizhong Village (茨中村).

Hongxing frequently takes travelers from Cizhong to Dimaluo (迪麻洛), but we are in search of a fantastic off-the-beaten trail that crosses the mountain ridge separating the Nu River (怒江) in the west from the Lancang (澜沧江) further east. We meet up in Bingzhongluo (丙中洛) near the Nu River and then journey downstream before starting our trek over the pass.

We set out from Shiyueliang (石月亮) — or Stone Moon — a remarkable hole in a mountain through which you can see the sky winking back from the other side. Hitching a ride on a three-wheeled motorbike with two Lisu kids, our destination is Shimendeng (石门登), a tiny village set against the stunning backdrops of Biluo Snow Mountain.

13 Days Exploring Three Parallel Rivers Protected Area

It is the world’s only existing “pure land”, depositing an everlasting dream; it is a paradise integrating magnificence, beauty, steepness, wonder, seclusion, and mystery. *Arrival in Dali and drive to Liuku* *Day 1* In the morning we meet in Dali, then driver 4.5 hours to LiuKu, the city beside the Nujiang. Sightseeing in Liuku. Overnight at Liuku hotel (3*) *Drive to Gongshan Day 2* Drive 240km along Nujiang (Salween) from Liuku to Gongshan, on the way visit beautiful gorge and local villages. It will take 6.5 hours. Overnight at Gongshan hotel (2*) *Trek to Qiqi (2400m) Day 3* Trek 6 hours, about 17km, from Gongshan(1850m) to Qiqi(2400m). Today you will trek up the east slope of Mt. Gaoligong. On the way, pass the Gazhu nature protection zone (2100m). Overnight camping *Trek to Dongshaofang Day 4* Trek 6 hours, 18km from Qiqi (2400m) to Dongshaofang (3600m). Today, you will continue trek up the east slope of Mt. Gaoligong. On the way, you have to cross several streams. Overnight camping *Trek to Sandui(3000m)* *Day 5* Trek up to the Nanmowang Pass at 3980m, then trek down the west slope of Mt. Gaoligong to Sandui. It will take 5 hours for trekking. Overnight camping. *Trek to Bapo and drive to Kongdang* *Day 6* Trek 16 km, 5.5hours down the mountain slope from Sandui to Bapo by the Single Dragon River(Dulong River). On the way, you have to cross several streams. After arrival Bapo drive along the Single Dragon River from Bapo to Kongdang. On the way, you will see several Suspend bridges and several Dulong minority villages. Overnight at local guest house *Jeep back to Gongshan* *Day 7* Drive 96km (7 hours) back to Gongshan. The road between KongDang and Gongshan is very narrow and steep. We need to take jeep and drive very slow. Overnight at Gongshan hotel (2*) *Day trip at Bingzhongluo village then drive to Dimaluo* *Day 8* Drive 30km to Bingzhongluo, visit the first bend of Nu River, small trek to visit Puhua Lamaism temple, Chongding Catholic church. Then drive to Dimaluo Tibetan village. Overnight at local guest house *Trek to Balagong Pasture* *Day 9* Trek 6.5 hours to Balagong Pasture, via Baihanluo village. Overnight camping *Trek to Luolongjialong* *Day 10* Trek 7.5 hours to Benggu Pasture. Today we will cross Selalaka pass, Sewalongba valley and arrival Luolongjialong pass. Overnight camping *Trek to Cizhong and drive to Deqin(3400m)* *Day 11* Today we trek 6.5 hours to Cizhong village, a Tibetan village beside the Mekong River. Visit the church, and then drive 3 hours to Deqin. Overnight at Deqin Caihong hotel(2*) *Drive from Deqin to Zhongdian* *Day 12* It will take 6 to 7 hours drive to Zhongdian. On the way, we will see Mud-pottery workshop in Nixi village, Town of Benzilan (an important transfer town between Yunnan and Tibet), the First Bend of Jinsha River, Baimang Snow Mountain, welcoming Pagodas of Deqin. You may also enjoy the view of meadow, Tibetan villages and the scenery on the way. Overnight at Zhongdian hotel(3*) *Visit tiger leaping gorge then drive to Lijiang* *Day 13* In the morning, we drive 102 kilometers, or around 2 hours to Qiaotou (1850 meters), Visit the Tiger Leaping Gorge then drive to Lijiang (90 kilometers). End of our trip.

Nujiang is one of the most mysterious erea in Yunnan. It's less touristic and beautiful place. There are Lisu, Tibetan and Dulong ethnic living in this area near the Burmese border and Tibetan border. This trip will bring you close to people's life beside the beautiful scenery of nature.
