People 7 is one of those bars that you walk into and you’re not really sure if you belong. Everything about the place is so cool… but don’t worry, everyone feels this way upon their first visit.

The bar at People 7 is always pleasantly busy, but never over-the-top crazy.  The drinks are yummy and not too expensive at about 40 - 50RMB for cocktails. The bar boasts a variety of seating options from comfy couches to seats ’with a view’ at the bar. There are also a number of tables hidden away for couples or “living room” type seating for bigger groups.  People 7 is a pretty low key kind of place. Despite its snazzy appearance, the music is not too loud and there are no scantily clad girls dancing on platforms.  Try to go to the bathroom before you have had too much to drink, as there is a trick to the doors that will not make for a pleasant experience if you’re desperate.

I consistently hear that the Chinese fare served for lunch and dinner is excellent. Westernized Chinese food is also available in a non-Chinese ambiance. Definitely give it a try, but make a reservation!  People 7 is certainly an ideal place to entertain and impress visitors.

Hint: There is a “code” to get in to the restaurant/bar.  If you make reservations they will tell you the code.  Otherwise (and I know it sounds a little ridiculous) try putting your fist in the holes at the top of the stairs upon entering. If you can’t figure it out someone will come along that knows how to get in!

How to get there:  Take Metro Line 1 to Changshu Rd. Station. Exit onto Changshu Rd, and head north. Walk three blocks, and then turn right on Julu Lu about 15 minutes later. People 7 will be on the right side, almost  at the corner where Julu Lu intersects with Fumin Lu.

Those seeking the best view in town, while at the same time hoping to not battle drunken bar goers all night long should check out New Heights on the Bund.  This classy, if somewhat sterile, bar and restaurant was the first establishment on the Bund to offer a large outdoor patio with fantastic views of the river and Pudong.

New Heights stirs up a wide variety of cocktails for 55 Yuan, a steal compared to the competition on the rest of the Bund where prices often hover closer to 80 Yuan. Try the Mojito, not quite authentic, but pretty darn good nonetheless.  Avoid the Manhattan unless you want a glass of bad bourbon with a cherry on top.  The food menu is “Continental Fusion,” which, yes, is a little odd. However, if you’re not sure what you are in the mood for you will appreciate being able to choose between a hearty bowl of soba noodle soup or a big western style hamburger with French fries and onion rings.

How to get there:  The closest subway stop is Central Henan Road, which is probably close to thirty minutes walk away. However, it’s a quick 10 Yuan cab ride from the subway station.  If you are done with New Heights and ready to try somewhere else, several different bars are easily within walking distance.  Some favorites are Glamour Bar and Number 5 (for live jazz) at 20 Guangdong Rd, or Bar Rouge up the Bund near Nanjing Rd at 18 Zhongshan Dong Yi Rd.

Golden Eagle Shopping Centre

Located in the Xinjiekou downtown area, the Gold Eagle Shopping Centre symbolizes the top level of consumerism in Nanjing. Although the categories of goods are similar to other stores, Golden Eagle boasts a selection of world-renowned brands which are rarely seen elsewhere in Nanjing.  Brands include CARA, ELANIE, JESSICA and udb for womens clothing and Dior, Lancome, Estee Lauder, Elizabeth Arden and Vichy for cosmetics. The prices are even quite high when compared  with the same products in Europe. Also, Gold Eagle does not offer large discounts or promotions like some other stores.  However, with a VIP card you may be entitled to a 5% discount.

In the picture to the left, Golden Eagle Shopping Center lies beyond the building being torn down.

Xijinjiekou (新街口): take bus 4, 5, 9, 18, near the west entrance of Xinjiekou station

Zhongyang Road - Video Games

There are at least 5 small console video game stores on Zhongyang Road (also called Zhongyang Lu or Central Road on some signs).  They have games, consoles, and accessories for Xbox, Xbox 360, PS2, PSP and the Nintendo Gamecube, Gameboy, and DS.  The shops also have a few Nintend...
The shops also have a few Nintendo systems that can’t be found in other places including the original IQue (A controller that downloads N64 games) and the IQue DS (The Chinese version of the Nintendo DS).

The consoles are actually more expensive than they are in North America. The games, which are “not fake”, but rather “copied”, are of course much cheaper.  There are some original games, but these games are a bit harder to come by.  For systems that cannot yet play copied games it should be easy to find at least some original games.

The video game shops are spread out over a space of 3 blocks.  The largest shop, which actually contains 3 separate vendors within, is on the east side of Zhongyang Road and is the closest to the subway station.  Take the subway to Gulou station and then walk north along Zhongyang Road to reach the largest shop.  The other stores are 1 to 2 blocks further north on the west side of Zhongyang Road.  You may need to search around a bit if you are looking for something specific.  Prices between the stores are fairly similar, but for more expensive items you should be able to cut down the price by bartering and weighing your options.  Staff members in all locations are very knowledgeable about their products, but they do not speak English.

Note: If you are using a console that you have brought to China from another country make sure it has a proper voltage converter.

Link: Also located on Zhongyang Road is The Castle Bar.

Mural is the place to be on a Friday night. Do not let the unassuming entrance on Yongjia Lu fool you. Simply head downstairs to find the fantastic Buddhist décor with a cavernous yet cozy ambiance that makes a perfect refuge on a cold or rainy night.  The 100RMB door charge includes all-you-can drink cocktails and beer all night long. The one time payment seems ideal for allowing guests to fully enjoy this high energy bar filled with 20-something expats ready for a night of drinking, dancing and socializing!

My favorite drinks at Mural include the dangerously easy to drink cosmos and vodka tonics, which are anything but watered down.  Bottled Carlsberg is a popular choice for those who like to know exactly what they’re drinking.  The main bar also supplies bottled water for the hydration-conscious drinkers among us.  Be sure to find the smaller bar tucked away under the entrance stairs. The bartenders here will pour shots to your heart’s desire.

On Friday nights Mural is crowded enough to make you feel comfortable dancing on the small stage in the back, but not so busy that you can’t move to the bar for a drink.  The crowd itself is mostly laid back and exudes the feeling of just wanting to have fun.  Fortunately, Mural attracts very little of the "meat-market" crowd. Wear your best or wear jeans and a sweatshirt; you will have fun either way.  Mural’s patrons are much less active most other nights, but it’s still worth checking out for its great atmosphere.

If headed to Mural for a special occasion or with a big group, call ahead for a reservation, which will get you a spot at a table or one of the mod and cozy couches near the bar.

How to get there: Take Metro Line 1 to Hengshan Rd station. Exit onto Yongjia Lu, and Mural will be just to the the left across the street from the exit.

I recommend visiting Thousand Buddha Mountain every few days during your stay in Jinan. Admission to the mountain costs 15 yuan, or you can purchase a year pass for 45 yuan. While there are many entrances to the grounds on all sides of the park, year passes can only be obtained at the Zheng Men (正门), or main gate. The main gate is at the southern end of Qian Fo Shan Road (千佛山路, and the ticket office to the right of the gate sells year passes. Be sure to bring a passport photo in order to acquire the year pass.

There is a totally cool copper Buddha figure which measures 80 feet (25 m) in height. At the foot of the Buddha visitors can roller-skate or burn incense and pray.

Fly an eagle kite, bring a book or some playing cards, or just sit back and watch the local Chinese and foreign communities of Jinan stretch their legs together. Just to the west of big Buddha is a large concrete statue of Guanyin, a female Buddha, sitting atop a labyrinthine cave complex.

Jogging, sitting, singing, and tai chi all take place throughout the extensive grounds. Plenty of public art displays within the gradens make for an enjoyable morning or afternoon stroll. Still, the best part of the grounds is the mountain itself.  Climbing a little in elevation to improve your view of Jinan is simply great. Sometimes we all just need to get out of the morass and gain perspective. When you reach the summit of Thousand Buddha Mountain look to the south of Jinan....into the mountain range which leads up to Mount Tai... the foremost Taoist peak in China!

CHENGDU, A PANDA CITY, A GOURMET CITY, A TEA CITY, LOOKING FOWARD TO YOUR ARRIVAL

Chengdu, with an area of 12,400 square kilometers and a polulation of about 14,170,000 is not just the biggest provincial capital in west China, but also the only city in the history of China whose name has reminded the same for 3,000 years since its establishment. In Chinese, "Cheng" means "success or successful" and "Du" means "big city or capital". This "Successful City" boasts a long history. It is believed that everything about Chengdu has their origin from "Sanxingdui Ruins", from where you can deeply discover the history story of Chengdu.

Giant pandas definitely are the best calling card and trademark of Chengdu. Every year, million of people are attracted by giant pandas to spend their holidays here, go sightseeing here, make investment here and even settle here permanently. The reason is that for people around the world, the charm of giant pandas cannot be replaced by anything else.

Various kinds of wonderful food shall be another reason attracting you to visit Chengdu. Of the four most famous schools of culinery art in China (Beijing cuisine, Sichuan cuisine, Jiangsu cuisine, Guangdong cuisine), Sichuan cuisine boasts tongue-numbing, hot, delicate and fresh taste and a variety of flavors, as "each dish has its unique taste and no two dishes have the same flavor." Such spcial flavors as fish-flavored, gongbao (with peanuts), and water-boiled are incomparable at home and abroad.

"The teahouses in Sichuan top the world, and those in Chengdu Top Sichuan." This widespread saying not only points out the status of Chengdu's teahouses but also the inseverable ties between Chengdu culture and tea. Like bars in Paris and cafes in Vienna, teahouse add a touch of refinement and leisureliness to Chengdu, an ancient yet modern metropolis. The practice of driking tea prevailed in Sichuan as earlt as prior to the Qin and Han Dynasties.

Wish you can have a nice trip in Chengdu. You will love it.
