Introduction to Wen Miao (Confucius Temple)
Confucius Temple at Wenmiao Road is the only ancient architecture complex in Shanghai with a history over 700. The temple served as the institution of higher learning in the city. They say that In its long history. Almost 300 students from the temple did the highest imperial exams and later served as higher officials in the court during Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. Today, the temple offers a quiet refuge from the crowded streets of the old Shanghai city with rigorous, grand and featured architectures. The temple is a popular Confucianist place of interest. It is now under city protection and attracts retired persons, teachers and students, as well as a great number of tourists from China and abroad.
A brief history of Wen Miao (Confucius Temple)
The first Confucius Temple of Shanghai was built as early as 1267 in Yuan Dynasty (1206-1638). It which as a school to cultivate Confucian scholars, but unfortunately it was destroyed in 1855 by the artillery fire of the Qing army. In the same year, famed scholars and officials in Shanghai start to rebuild the Confucius Temple at the present site. This was the former site of Sea Defense offices of Ming Dynasty (1368- 1644). After the start of People's Republic of China, the temple was restored in 1959 and 1978. For the celebration of the 2550th birthday of the great sage- Confucius in 1999, it was carefully repaired for three years before it was reopened again to the public.
What to see in Wen Miao (Confucius temple)?
As in all Chinese Confucian temples, the Wen Miao of Shanghai features a Lingxing Gate leading to the main hall of the temple, which is called Dacheng Hall. In the hall you can see a copper statue of Confucius. This statue was donated by Mr. Chen Chun from Hong Kong in 1987, to celebrate the 2540th birthday of Confucius. In the center of the hall is a seating Confucius carved from camphor wood. It is laced with gold, and the figures standing by are his disciples, Yan Hui (颜回) and Zeng Shen (曾参). On the inner walls of the hall, there are full texts of the Analects of Confucius (论语, a collection of Confucius’ words by his disciples). This is quite unique in all Confucius temples in the country.
Other buildings in the temple are Chongsheng Hall, Minglun Hall, Kuixing Garret and Zunjing Garret. On the verandas between Minglun Hall and Zunjing Garret there is a list of 279 famed scholars that passed the highest imperial exams, including 3 No.1 Scholars of the exams. Inside the verandas near the Kuixing Garret are several inscriptions composed by renowned scholars of Ming and Qing dynasties. Outside are cultural Ming and Qing dynasty souvenir shops. In other halls, there are also exhibits for bizarre stones, root carvings, teapots, ceramics and the like. During the celebrations at the end of a year, the Wen Miao is rather busy with all kinds of activities, such as the blessing with the bell-striking, folk performances by folk artisans in the square, tea ceremonies, riddle parties and so on.
Book Market in Wen Miao
In the northeast part of Wen Miao you find the renowned book paradise of Shanghai. Here you can find copies of all de original Ming and Qing dynasty books, antique books and also other books, magazines, newspapers, comic strips and secondary books can be found in this market. Here you need to bargain for a good price. Also, a lot of Shanghainese people like to go to this market on a Sunday morning to watch Confucius Temple, hunt for books, taste various delicacies, and shop around.

If you want to experience the culture of Shanghai City over the past 100 years, Duolun Road, the Cultural Celebrities street, is the best choice. This road is only 550 meters long. It was the place where a lot of China's modern literature writers like Lu Xun, Mao Dun, Guo Moruo, and Ye Shengtao lived. It the L-shaped pedestrian street you can see the former residences of these writers. You can also find old bookstalls, private museums, and small antique shops selling calligraphy works, paintings, and rosewood appliances. There are also some nice western-style mansions, some Islamic buildings and a famous Spanish garden villa.
It is a well-decorated street, colourful and beautiful flowers in the street square, an old and simple pavement, and classical architectures, all these scenes make the road a comfortable place to visit and relax. Walking down the road, you will probably encounter some newlyweds in traditional Chinese costume having their wedding photos taken. This sweet moment is just like a ray of sunshine, making this ancient cultural street even warmer and cosier.
League of Left-Wing Writers Memorial Hall
Maybe the League of Left-Wing Writers Memorial Hall is the place most worth mentioning. It is at No.145 on Duolun Road, covering an area of 818 square yards (684 square meters). The League of Left-Wing Writers were active in the 1930s. This group was led by Lu Xun, a great writer whose works still have a big influence in China today. Many excellent writers joined the league to spread Marxism throughout the nation via their works. This memorial hall is a three-storey garden house built of bricks and wood. Many precious relics are displayed here so visitors can learn more about this league and its members. The admission is free and this hall is open from 9.00 am - 5.00 pm and closed on Mondays.
Xi Shi Bell Tower
From the memorial hall, you will be attracted by a 59 feet (18 meters) high bell tower, Xi Shi Bell Tower, on the corner. It was named after famous prose of Lu Xun, Dawn Blossoms Plucked at Duck (Zhao Hua Xi Shi). There is an old bronze clock embedded in the marble-laid tower. At the top of the tower, there is a robotic device chiming and telling the history of this Cultural Celebrities Street.
Hong De Tang Church
After the bell tower, the famous Christian church, the Hong De Tang is right in front of you. This church differs from other churches in China because it is completely made with Chinese features. This is seldom seen in China as most Christian Churches are made with Western architectural style. Admission is free and this hall is open from 9.00 am - 6.00 pm. Worship Service time: 07.00, 9.30 and 19.00 hrs.
Folk Museums
In Duolun Cultural Celebrities Street a lot of former houses are now private museums. Among them, Jinquan Ancient Coins Museum is the most famous one near the northern end of the road and it is still open to the public. This three-storey house used to be the mansion of Tang Enbo, a capable general of the Republic of China (1912 – 1949). Nowadays, over 100,000 coins dating from the Qin Dynasty (221 – 207 BC) to 1949 are on display. Across the road, you can find a row of Shikumen buildings, traditional Shanghai-style architecture combining the features of both Western and oriental buildings. They used to be exhibition galleries of bookplates, bells, and stones. Now, only the one displaying chopsticks is still open to the public. You will see various kinds of chopsticks made of gold, silver, jade, bones, and bamboo. Please note: The museums do not have fixed opening hours; you can only visit when the owners are in. Admission for Coins Museum is 10 yuan and for Chopstick Museum is free.

First we will visit the 700 years old City wall, We will climb up from south gate and have a walk on the wall. We are not sure how many km we can walk, because of the renovating of the wall. Normally we will walk from south gate to the Yunlu Exit.
Then visit the Confucius temple, there is a old building named Dacheng Hall which is over 840 years old. From outside, we can see the big wood joints to lift the big roof around the building which is named Dougong. Due to this design, there are less columns inside the hall for giving the big space for the statues and the prayer. We have chance to see the Confucius statue and learn the philosophy of Confucius. If you like, you can pray for you and your children to get better study.
There is the Paper Cutting master named Wentao nearby the exit of Confucius temple. She is very smart and create the new style paper cutting with much more details and good wishes on it. Her products are made by hanks. It is worth to visit and buy as a souvenir from Pingyao. From the table standing and wall hangings. Please remember, take the red one because of red is the traditional and happy color. But the white one is the best. It is really difficult to choose, because of all of them are really nice.
Then you can have coffee break or tea break if you need at Chummy coffee, after this, visit the City god temple (ChenghuangMiao) which is most beautiful temple inside the wall. Because of the roof is covered by the colorful glazed tiles. There is not only city god and also the three money gods, Now you know why pingyao was the financial center.
