At the northwest corner of People’s Square stands a clock tower which once marked the grandstand of the 1934 British Racing Club. It now houses the Shanghai Art Museum. On top of the museum is Kathleen’s 5, which serves up simple but pleasing American brunch, afternoon tea, and evening meals.
The restaurant itself is a glass box on top of the older building. The result of this design is that Kathleen’s should be avoided on the very hottest and coldest days of the year. The advantage of essentially eating in a greenhouse is that almost all the tables offer a great view overlooking People’s Square. Kathleen’s is also ideal for an evening drink out on the balcony. Brunch, served from 10:30-3:00, offers a decent Eggs Benedict (65RMB). However, the Mushroom Risotto (90RMB) and the admittedly meaty steak sandwich (120RMB) are a little overpriced. The highlight was the desserts. The Crème Cassonade with Lychee Sorbet (40RMB) and the Chocolate Mousse Brownie with Pistachio ice-cream (45RMB) were both excellent.
After your meal be sure to take the stairs down on your way out. The walls are decorated with photos of People’s Square in its past life as a racecourse in the old British Concession.
Directions: The art museum is at the intersection of Nanjing Lu and Huangpi Nan Lu on the northwest corner of People’s Square

While Xiamen can be reached from many destinations by express train, typical rides can be rather long: Beijing - 35 hrs; Shanghai - 28 hrs; Xi’An - 40 hrs; Chongqing - 43 hrs; Nanjing - 31 hrs; Guangzhou - 15 hrs, etc. The experience can be relaxing and refreshing in a soft sleeper though. Xiamen’s only train station (厦门火车站) is situated at the intersection of Hubin Donglu (湖滨东路) and Xiahe Lu (厦禾路). The station, built in 1993, is already starting to show its age. It is easy to get to and from the station by public bus or taxi. Conveniently, the station is also the site of one of Xiamen’s major public bus terminals.
How to get there: The terminus of all of the following bus routes is at the train station: 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 13, 17, 21, 26, 28, 33, 37, 38, 42, 43, 46, 48, 49, 72, 80, 83 and 88. Numerous other buses also pass by the station.

Nanjing's Tourist Attractions
Nanjing, a city with a long and profound history, is most famous for its many historical and cultural attractions. The most dramatic reminder of Nanjing’s past as the capital of several Chinese dynasties is the great city wall, much of which is still intact.
Although Nanjing’s parks are not the main draw for tourists, Purple Mountain and Xuanwu Lake are still two excellent examples of Nanjing’s vast public grounds. Purple Mountain is home to several of the most commonly visited tourist attractions including Dr. Sun Yat Sen’s Mausoleum and the Ming Tomb.
Xinjiekou,Hunan Road and Fuzimiao (Confucious Temple) could be considered tourist attractions, shopping areas, or even "eating areas."
Nanjing's Food
Nanjing boasts so many tasty Chinese restaurants that it is impossible to list all of them. To get started, head for Lion’s Bridge. This is a logical starting point as the area offers a large selection and variety of restaurants all packed into one small place. However, wherever you are in Nanjing, you won’t need to travel far to find some excellent traditional Chinese Huaiyang cuisine.
When traveling in China, it is of utmost importance to sample the local famous snacks in every city. In Nanjing, some of these snacks are local specialties while others have been imported from other cities. Click here for a quick overview of Nanjing’s specialty foods.
Nanjing does have a wide selection of foreign restaurants, but it is hard to determine which ones are authentic until you have tried them. For that reason, first consult the reviews on Synotrip.

During the May Day holiday, I visited Nanjing, a city rich in history and culture. It was a wonderful blend of ancient heritage and modern development. One of the highlights was my visit to the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum. Climbing the long staircase, I felt a deep sense of respect for the founding father of modern China. The view from the top was breathtaking, and the peaceful surroundings made the experience even more memorable.
I also explored the Confucius Temple area, which was lively and full of traditional charm. The Qinhuai River at night was especially beautiful, with red lanterns reflecting off the water and boats slowly gliding by. Street food was everywhere—delicious and affordable. I tried duck blood soup and sesame pancakes, which were both unique and tasty.
Another impressive site was the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall. It was a solemn reminder of history, and the exhibits were powerful and moving. Though it was emotionally heavy, I felt it was important to understand and remember the past.
Overall, my trip to Nanjing was both educational and enjoyable. The city left a lasting impression on me with its mix of solemn history and vibrant daily life. I would definitely recommend it to anyone interested in Chinese history and culture.
