Also known as Hermannstadt, Sibiu is a charming multiethnic little town in the heart of Romania, in Transylvania area and the country's most prestigious cultural hub.
Brimming with museums, galleries, picturesque plazas and excellent examples of Gothic and Baroque architecture, Sibiu has celebrated its status of European Capital of Culture in 2007.

Most important attractions include the Astra Museum , one of the finest open-air museums in Europe, the Brukenthal Museum and the medieval Old Town filled with stylish side-walk cafes, historic sights and fascinating architectural buildings.

Sibiu's Old Town retains the grandeur of its earlier days when rich and powerful guilds dominated regional trade. Like Sighisoara and Brasov, it has a distinctly Germanic feeling. Sections of the medieval wall still guard the historic area, where narrow streets pass steep-roofed 17th century buildings with gable overhangs before opening into vast, church-dominated squares such as Great Square and Little Square.

The city also lies close to the Fagaras Mountains, a very popular trekking destination, close to the Paltinis resort, a popular winter holiday destination, and it is at the heart of the former Saxon communities in Transylvania renowned for its fortified churches.
