Some of Wuxi's best and most interesting foods can be bought right on the street. This is the ultimate “fast food”, the true flavors of China, great for a lunch on the run or a leisurely snack as you enjoy a day of shopping.
Street vendors tend to be very mobile, because some of them operate without permission or proper licensing in parts of in the central business district. As you purchase a snack from a vendor, you will surely notice a nervous expression come across their face at the site of an approaching policeman. He or she will often have little choice, but to quickly hop on their trike and pedal away. However, a lot of them are quite legal and permanent.
There are street sellers down most of the small alleys off the main streets with a variety of offerings. Probably the best place to find a wide selection is along Hou Xi Xi, the narrow street which runs at right angles to Zhong Shan Lu right in the middle of the city.

Now here we have a tourist attraction that is a little unusual. While it's a notable change from temples, rock-cut stairs, and gardens, it remains so very Chinese. You will probably witness a movie being made, take a ride on a boat, horse, or even a camel, and definitely learn something about China’s incomparable history and culture.
There are three movie sets:
“The Three Kingdoms” (三国城), “The Water Margin City” (水浒城), and “The Tang City” (唐城).
You could easily spend a couple of hours at each.
Getting there:
The K 82 bus goes to the movie sets from the Railway Station, or you can pick it up along the route. The bus costs 2 yuan, like all ‘K’ buses, but on this bus there is a conductor selling tickets. The trip takes about half an hour and the Three Kingdoms set is its final stop. You can get off earlier if you wish to visit one of the other sets first.
Entrance Fees:
To see just the Three Kingdoms – 55 yuan
To see just the Water Margin City – 50 yuan
To see both of these – 90 yuan
To see all three sets – 120 yuan
Obviously the package deal will save you money, but make sure to allow yourself enough time and that your legs are up to a fair bit of walking. You could also hire an electric cart to transport you around, but you may not be able to see as much close up that way.

Almost any viewpoint in Wuxi will draw you to Xi Hui Park, as the hill it sits on pokes outward above some of Wuxi’s tallest buildings.
The park contains a number of attractions, so there are a variety of admission packages depending on how much you want to see.
- For starters there is the basic scenic area. Visitors stroll along the paths amidst flowers and other displays, take in the scenery, climb the hill and the pagoda, or even have a light lunch.
- Another option is the cableway. The ride is quite long at 15-20 minutes each way. Visitors can buy a ticket as part of your entry, or buy one inside the park for 28 RMB (15 RMB for children). The views are great throughout the ride despite the fact that it is often a bit hazy at the very top. There is a limited selection of snacks to buy at the top.
- There is also a small zoo. In 2006 construction began on a panda enclosure; the pandas will be here soon. Most of the other animals are in the old-fashioned (and inredibly out-of-date) concrete and metal-barred cages. They can just about poke between the bars if you have a bite of apple or something to offer them.
- At peak times some of the animals get dressed up and do ridiculously cute human things. On quieter days it's nice for the kids on school excursions to be able to go home and say they saw some interesting animals at the zoo. It only costs 10 RMB to purchase a ticket, so why not take a peek?
- There is the museum of clay figurines. The figurines were created with a special kind of Wuxi purple clay.
- Then there is the mine. The mine is free to walk through, but if you want to stop and see a small collection of reptiles (snakes, tortoises, crocodiles) on display in one of the rooms you have to pay another 5 RMB. The crocodile looks like he’s dead, but the curator will open the cage and poke him with a stick he keeps handy if you look curious enough.
- There is a warriors museum. It's designed to scare children, just the way kids like it.
- There is also an amusement park with seven rides for kids, which can be included as part of your ticket price.
There are two hills: Xi Shan (锡山) and Hui Shan (惠山). Sometimes you will hear people refer to the hills as 'Xi Hui'.
If you are someone that enjoys a healthy and pleasant walk, you can easily amble from the from the city to the park. Otherwise there are several buses that head towards the park, including the number 10.

Although there are limited flights into Wuxi airport from a few places outside of China, most travelers reach Wuxi via Pudong Airport, Shanghai.
- There is a direct shuttle bus from Pudong to Wuxi, if you can find it. It is a minibus and takes a bit more than three hours.
- Or you can catch a taxi (for 150 yuan) from the airport to Shanghai Railway Station, and catch a train straight to Wuxi from there. It is best to get a "soft seat" ticket to Wuxi; it costs around 30 yuan. The trip takes about an hour and a half depending on how many times the train stops.
- There are a number of different train types you can take. The fastest is the "bullet" (CRH) train and the trip is about 50 minutes. Cost for first class ticket (very comfortable seats for a fast relaxed journey) is 48 rmb and worth every penny. These trains start with the letter D (e.g. D32 leaves Shanghai at 10.50 am arrives Wuxi at 11.36 am). Other express trains start with the letter T, slower trains start with N.
- Or you can catch the high speed maglev train which takes you close to Shanghai Railway Station. Then take a quick taxi ride to the station to catch the train to Wuxi. This method is for those who really fancy the experience of traveling at three hundred kilometres an hour for a few minutes.
- If you just want to get to Wuxi without enduring the hassle of changing places in the enormous city of Shanghai, it is possible to get a taxi all the way from Pudong to Wuxi for between 350 and 500 yuan. If you have someone expecting you, or you are booked into a helpful hotel, this can be arranged and then there will be someone awaiting you at the airport holding a card with your name on it.
Coming from Nanjing
Coming by bus from Nanjing, the trip takes about three hours, and costs about 30 yuan. The trains are also frequent and cheap (currently 28 yuan). In Wuxi the main long-distance bus station is right next to the train station.
The same train system mentioned above also operates from Nanjing. The D train trip is around an hour and ten minutes.

Wuxi is one of the less well-known cities in China, which seems strange to those who live here. Interestingly, only three or four years ago expatriates were rarely seen in the city, and not many cars were privately owned. Now Wuxi is listed as one of the 15 economic central cities in China as well as one of the ten leading tourist cities.
The first thing visitors will notice when approaching Wuxi, especially when arriving by train or bus from the west, is the lush vegetation and the abundance of water in the many rivers, lakes and canals. Wuxi is located in the rich, fertile, low-lying area of the Yangtze River delta, often referred to as the “land of fish and rice”.
The main tourist attraction is Tai Hu (Lake Tai), one of China’s four main freshwater lakes. There are a number of sites to visit and activities to enjoy in and around the lake, including islands and boat rides, parks and gardens, and even a movie set. For tourists who choose to make the lake the centre of their visit, there are plenty of hotels and resorts near the lake.
Near Tai Hu visitors can also enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the Plum Garden, and closer to the city, Li Yuan (Li Garden) on the shores of the smaller Li Hu (Li Lake). At 88 metres in height the bronze Ling Shan Buddha at Ma Shan (Ma Hill) is another one of Wuxi’s most spectacular sites.
Very close to the city centre is the hilly area of Xihui Park. The park contains many attractions including a small zoo, a cable ride, and a pottery museum. Xihui Park is located just across the Grand Canal, the largest and busiest canal that crisscrosses the city.
The central business district is very modern and compact. Public transportation is abundant, as are taxis, but the area is small enough to walk around for those who enjoy a healthy stroll. The railway station is north of the shopping district with frequent trains running along the Nanjing-Shanghai rail line.
Those who come to Wuxi for more than its tourist attractions find it a progressive, ever-expanding commercial and industrial centre. An ever-increasing amount of multi-national companies are setting up operations in the new industrial districts on the southeast side of the city. There is ample accomodation available in the city itself and at very reasonable rates in the New District.
