Wuxi Train Station

The Wuxi train station is conveniently located just outside the Central Business District, and a short 8 yuan taxi ride from most locations around the city. Many city buses also have a terminus right outside the station.  Express buses heading to other provinces also leave from the bus station alongside the railway station.
 
The train system is very efficient and reliable. The train is one of the most convenient ways to arrive in Wuxi. The Train Station (huoche zhan, 火车站) is naturally located on Train Station Road (Che Zhan Lu, 车站路). The train line to Wuxi runs from Nanjing through Wuxi to Suzhou and then Shanghai.
 
There is a ticket office at the station (phone [0510] - 82301033). There is another ticket office on Renmin Lu (人民路).  This ticket office (phone [0510] - 82708838) is just east of Wuxi’s main north-south road, Zhongshan Lu (中山路).
   
You can also book tickets at Liangxi Lu (phone [0510] - 85868704) which is outside of the Central Business District on the west side of the Grand Canal in the area particularly popular with Japanese visitors.
 
If you book tickets on the phone (or ask your hotel to reserve them for you), then you can ask to have them delivered to you. There is usually an extra 10 yuan fee per ticket.

Although there are limited flights into Wuxi airport from a few places outside of China, most travelers reach Wuxi via Pudong Airport, Shanghai.
  • There is a direct shuttle bus from Pudong to Wuxi, if you can find it. It is a minibus and takes a bit more than three hours. 
  • Or you can catch a taxi (for 150 yuan) from the airport to Shanghai Railway Station, and catch a train straight to Wuxi from there. It is best to get a "soft seat" ticket to Wuxi; it costs around 30 yuan. The trip takes about an hour and a half depending on how many times the train stops. 
  • There are a number of different train types you can take. The fastest is the "bullet" (CRH) train and the trip is about 50 minutes. Cost for first class ticket (very comfortable seats for a fast relaxed journey) is 48 rmb and worth every penny. These trains start with the letter D (e.g. D32 leaves Shanghai at 10.50 am arrives Wuxi at 11.36 am). Other express trains start with the letter T, slower trains start with N.
  • Or you can catch the high speed maglev train which takes you close to Shanghai Railway Station. Then take a quick taxi ride to the station to catch the train to Wuxi. This method is for those who really fancy the experience of traveling at three hundred kilometres an hour for a few minutes.
  • If you just want to get to Wuxi without enduring the hassle of changing places in the enormous city of Shanghai, it is possible to get a taxi all the way from Pudong to Wuxi for between 350 and 500 yuan. If you have someone expecting you, or you are booked into a helpful hotel, this can be arranged and then there will be someone awaiting you at the airport holding a card with your name on it.
 

Coming from Nanjing

 
Coming by bus from Nanjing, the trip takes about three hours, and costs about 30 yuan. The trains are also frequent and cheap (currently 28 yuan). In Wuxi the main long-distance bus station is right next to the train station.
 
The same train system mentioned above also operates from Nanjing. The D train trip is around an hour and ten minutes.

Walking around Wuxi 走遍无锡

There is a ring road, Jie Fang Lu (解放路), running in a circle around the Central Business District. It is logically named in four sections: Jie Fang Nan (south) Lu, Jie Fang Xi (west) Lu, Jie Fan Bei (north) Lu, and Jie Fang Dong (east) Lu. The street names are always given in Chinese and Pinyin (English spelling), so you can always figure out roughly where you are in the city.
 
Running north-south, bisecting the circle formed by Jie Fang Lu, is the main street, Zhong Shan Lu (中山路). This is where many of the big shops, department stores and hotels are located.
 
Wuxi's other main thoroughfares run east-west. Ren Min Lu (人民路) is the biggest of these roads, just north of the city centre. Just south of the city centre is Xue Qian Jie (学前街) which also runs east-west. The street that runs east-west across the middle of the city is rather narrow and is named Hou Xi Xi (后西溪) on the west side of Zhong Shan Lu and Chong Ning Lu (崇宁路) on the east side.

Taxis around Wuxi are plentiful and reliable, and are an excellent way to move around the city quickly. You will rarely have to wait for more than a minute to hail a taxi....

In fact, if you stand by the road looking lost cab drivers will often honk gently as they pass slowly by to see if you want a ride.
 
The fare starts at 8 yuan. For most destinations within the city center, 8 yuan will be sufficient. Going somewhere in the outer city limits is likely to cost around 20 – 30 yuan.
 
Hotels and businesses almost always have business cards and taxi cards available to guide your driver to where you wish to go.

Public Transportation - buses 公共交通 - 公交车

Traveling by bus around Wuxi is cheap and easy. Like anywhere else in China, it can be an interesting experience in itself.
 
The air-conditioned buses, or ‘K’ buses, are sleek and new, and comfortable to ride in – especially if you can find a seat. They are heated in winter and cooled in summer. Often there are TVs showing Chinese shows, advertisements, or music. These buses cost 2 yuan, and passengers just drop coins into the slot as they climb the steps. If you have a bus pass or IC card, it costs you only 1.9 Yuan as you swipe your card on the way in.
 
The regular buses are older and only cost 1 Yuan, or .95 Yuan with a bus pass. The older buses bring you to your destination as fast or sometimes even faster than the K   buses, because they are more frequent and you won't have to wait as long for the regular buses at the bus stop. Since these buses are more frequent, they are often less crowded as well. They rarely have a fully functional gearbox, and playing music over the sound of the engine would be a waste of time, but you didn’t come to China to ride on comfortable buses, now did you? Let the adventure of the ride be part of your whole experience!
 
Most routes have both types of buses running, so you can choose your level of comfort, or else just take what comes.
 
Knowing which bus to catch is quite simple if you purchase one of the local maps from any of the little magazine kiosks around the city. They usually cost about 4 Yuan. You can also pick one up at the railway or bus station or at your hotel. Although the names of the streets are all in Chinese, you can still find your way around using the bus route numbers if you can figure out where you are on the map.
   
The map has another use too. Standing in the street while holding a map and looking vaguely (or extremely) puzzled should attract some eager young helpers who would love to practice their English while assisting you.
