The Short Review:
Omi is my hero.
The Meduim Review:
Omi was my first ever tour guide and I am delighted she has that honour. I think she may also be my last tour guide, simply put she was so good that no-one else could begin to compare. She has set an impeccably high bench-mark.
In my mind a tour guide must have certain qualities: knowledge, intelligent, articulate, compassionate, considerate, patient, relatable, sociable, likeable and a whole lot more 'ables'.
I have non of those qualities. Omi has them all (and more that I am not smart enough to think of and/or know how to spell). Even though I am older than her I can't help but think that when I grow up I want to be like Omi. Unfortunately I grew up thinking I was pretty so never developed any of those essential qualities, and discovered too late in life that I wasn't even that pretty to begin with.
Hiring a tour guide in my mind was a risk. Are they going to show up; are they going to be ideal; are they not going to make you go tourist shopping so they can earn commission?
These were factors that entered my mind. I rolled the dice with Omi and my biggest regret was that I was too cautious. I did not afford myself the luxury of having her show my around for another day. I will take that to the grave.
The day I lost contact with Omi I had moved on from Shanghai. It was on that day that I lost my wallet and my phone stopped working, thankfully I had friends to rely on to get me by for a few days. A part of me likes to think I would have been just as well looked after had it occurred in Shanghai.
