There are about 70 islands in this earthly paradise. This amazing archipelago is not located far from other Indonesian Islands. The closest large island is Sumatra but due to a variety of factors this portion of land has maintained its uniqueness. For some period of time it was almost completely isolated from other islands which helped the Mentawai people develop their own customs and traditions but there are other parts of life on the archipelago that is still unique; the animal and plant life. There are many endemic species on the archipelago territory.  

One of the favorite activities in the surrounding ocean is surfing that attracts passionate surfers from all over the planet.

Tue Pejat is the capital of the regency and it is located on the archipelago´s largest island Sipura.

Visitors to the islands also like to explore and peek into the life of the indigenous people called Mentawai. Their lifestyle is almost unspoiled with the modern ways of life. They still live as gatherers and hunters and they tend to nomadic lifestyle. Their lives are intertwined with the strong spirituality, and body art. Another typical tradition for which they consider that help people become more beautiful is the tradition of teeth sharpening. They still live in their typical bamboo houses with grass roofs.

Mentawai Islands are blessed with spectacular beauty and it is a place that still hasn´t suffered much from tourism activity.
