Sports apparel can be found all over Shenyang, and certainly on Taiyuan Street and Middle Street. However, for those shopping specifically for sporting goods, the best bet is to go to the Shenyang Gymnasium (体育场 tǐyù chǎng), also known as Sports Park (体育公园  tǐyù gōngyuán). This area features a large outdoor playground and basketball courts complimented by an underground sporting goods market. The surrounding streets are also lined with sporting goods stores. General sports apparel, balls, rackets, rollerblades, ice skates, shoes, and much more is available here. 
 
Location: Sports Park is in Heping District (和平区) on the south side of Zhongshan Park, a couple blocks northwest of Heping Square. It is between Min Zhu Lu (民主路) and Nan San Ma Lu (男三马路). Tell the driver “tǐyù chǎng” or “zhōng shān gōng yuán” if headed by taxi.

Metro is THE place to go for imported food products. They have just about every kind of foreign food you could want: cheese, wine, liquor (big selection), maple syrup, cereal, good chocolate. Basically all the difficult-to-find items can be found here in one convenient stop. However, because METRO is a wholesaler, you must have a membership card in order to shop there. There is no fee to join, but apparently new members are supposed to be affiliated with a company. The exact rules are a bit unclear, but most foreigners seem to be able get a membership with just a business card from their place of employment. Language teachers should try to bring a business card with the name of your school. It's probably not worth the bother for those on a short stay in Shenyang. However, the membership is quite worthwhile for those living in Shenyang, as a better selection and value of foreign goods cannot be found anywhere else in Shenyang. 
  

METRO is in Tiexi District (铁西区tiě xī qū). Ask a taxi driver for "mài dé long shì chǎng."

Tokyo is probably Shenyang’s most well-known Japanese restaurant. They serve delicious Japanese food.  While the food is quite good, the prices are a little high and the portions are a little small…real Japanese style.

Location: The restaurant is on the west side of San Jing Jie (三经街), 100 meters south of the U.S. Consulate. Look for a large orange sign that says “东京餐厅”。 There’s no English on the sign.

Those tired of ordinary Chinese restaurants will certainly be relieved by the change of culinary pace at Thai Wei Tai. This three story  restaurant has a beautiful atmosphere that is quite unique compared to the norm for Shenyang. The lighting is dim, but the Buddhist ornaments include shiny gold and bright colors, which makes the place suitable for a romantic evening or a night out with a bunch of friends. 
 
Thai Wei Tai offers a very large selection of food—the menu itself is enormous and includes lots of full color pictures of a wide range of curries, seafood, meats, vegetables, Thai-style hotpot, and desserts. The dishes are delicious and very beautifully presented. The restaurant also has a full bar with a good selection of Chinese and imported wines and beers. 
  
The prices here are on the expensive side, but not unreasonable. Plan on spending 50-100 yuan per person for dinner. 
 
If you’re in Shenyang for any length of time, Thai Wei Tai is well worth a visit. 

Location: On San Jing Jie (三经街), across from the U.S. Consulate (美国领事馆 měiguó lǐngshì guǎn) and next door to Heidi’s Restaurant.  Just tell a taxi driver to go to the consulate.

Location:  The mall is on the north side of Government Square (市府广场 shì fǔ guǎng chǎng).  The main entrance faces south (click “Government Square” link for bus routes)

San Hao Street Computer and Software City

Computer city, often called “diànnǎo chéng” (电脑城), or sometimes just“sān hǎo jiē” (三好街), is supposedly one of the largest computer and electronic markets in northeastern China. Though the shops here specialize in computers and software, basically any electronic item is sold here.
 
In the past, this was the place to go for cheap (and illegal) DVDs and computer software.  However recently, the police have been cracking down somewhat on the pirated movie trade (both in Shenyang and throughout China), but this just means that the trade is out of sight.  By strolling about the area for a few minutes, you’re bound to be approached by people saying “DVD, DVD, DVD!”  Go with them to begin browsing through their stash of incredibly cheap DVDs and software.
     
During the day the street is always packed with people.  If you get the craving for a Western snack, McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, Europaer, KFC, and a newly opened Subway Sandwich store are all located on san hao jie. 
      
Note: San hao street is NOT a good place to shop for cellular phones!  Also, all shops close daily at 5:30pm, so don’t plan on shopping late.
   
 How to Get There: Computer City is south of the inner ring road.  It’s a few blocks west of the Wenhua Lu Interchange and just east of Northeastern University (东北大学, dōng běi dà xué).  The following buses will take you there: 135,239,117,282,272,502,225,244,环。  Otherwise, all taxi drivers will know "sān hǎo jiē."

Jin Du Bowling Alley (金都保龄球馆 jīn dū bǎo líng qiú guǎn)
Located in Heping District on Nan wu Ma lu (南五马路), near the south end of Taiyuan Street and a few blocks west of Heping Square. Ask a taxi driver for Jin Du Hotel (金都饭店 jīn dū fàn diàn)—the bowling is the building next door, down stairs. They close at 11:00pm. Bowling is 10 per game before 7:00, and 15 after 7:00.  Shoe rental is 3 yuan.

Fantasia Dinner Theater (closed until further notice)

For an interesting night out, check out the Fantasia Theater. There are two shows each evening. The shows are very professionally done, with a nice variety of performances, and beautiful costumes and stage settings.  The theater is closed on Mondays.

The “Dinner Show” is every day from 5:00-8:00 pm.  It includes traditional Chinese acrobatics, Spanish Flamenco dancing, French Cabaret, Latin Carnival, Venetian Carnival, and Strong Men. The performers are from China, France, Spain, and Brazil. There are four ticket prices, based on seat location, and service included. (prices listed are per person)
       VIP Area: 480 yuan, includes Western style dinner.
       “R” Area: 350 yuan, includes Western style dinner.
       “S” Area: 320 yuan, includes Wester style dinner.
       Second Floor Seating: 200 yuan, includes soft drinks only. 
 
The “Drink Show” is every day from 9:00-11:00 pm. This performance includes only Chinese traditional acrobatics (杂技 zá jì), and no dinner is available. This show is considerably cheaper than the “Dinner Show,” though not quite as spectacular. No ticket is required for entry, but you are expected to buy drinks, which include beer, wine and soft drinks. According to theater personnel, plan on around 100 yuan per person.

Lu Xun Academy, commonly known as “lǔ měi”, is one of northern China’s top Fine Arts colleges, and has trained many of China’s most notable artists. Lu Mei offers a impressive range of academic pursuits, including Traditional Chinese Painting, Oil Painting, Sculpture, Photography, Fashion Design, Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Art History, and Teaching. 
 
Lu Mei is open to foreign students, but Chinese proficiency may be required. Tuition fees are $3500 US per year for undergraduate students, and $3800 US per year for post-grads. 
 
 
 
Location: Lu Mei is located on San Jing Jie (三经街) just 1 km north of San Hao Jie Computer City. Simply tell a taxi driver for “lǔ měi.”
