Shenyang Attractions

Dongling Park and Fuling Tomb

Fuling Tomb (福陵) is located inside Dongling Park (东陵公园), and along with Zhaoling and Yongling is one of Shenyang’s three famous tombs. The tomb is similar to Zhaoling Tomb in Beiling Park, but smaller. It was built in 1651 by the early Qing Dynasty emperor Shunzhi (顺治) as a resting place for his grandfather Nurhachi and his mistress. Subsequent emperors Qianlong (乾隆) and Kangxi (康熙) also added buildings and adornments to the shrine, and made periodic visits here to honor their ancestors.

The park is located in a forested area overlooking the Hun River (浑河), and is a pleasant place to take a half-day away from the city. To make the most of your time, consider visiting nearby Ocean World or Botanical Gardens in the same day.

Cost: Entry to the tomb is 30 yuan.

Location: 8 km east of Shenyang, the park is approximately 45 minutes from the city center by bus. A taxi will probably cost around 60 yuan. Take the 168 (formerly 330) bus from Ma Lu Wan or Da Shuai Fu, or take the 218 bus from the Imperial Palace.

Take bus 148, 168, 168, 218, 330, 385 to get there.

The Shenyang Ocean World (actually located outside of Shenyang), was recently opened in 2006 around the same time as the World Horticultural Exhibition. Ocean World features a large “walk-through” aquarium with a variety of fish, sharks, turtles, rays, and much more. The aquarium also boats a sea lion show, a small reptile garden, a beluga whale, and perhaps the most amazing attraction…a mermaid show.

For those in Shenyang simply seeking something to do, it’s worthwhile to make the trip to Ocean World. Also, construction is already underway on new attractions, so it can only get better in the future.

Cost: 80 yuan per person.

How to get there:  There are four ways to get there:
--take a train from the north station or the south station (get off at the WORLD EXPO);
--take a taxi for around 100 yuan;
--there is one special charter leaving at 9am everyday from each of the following locations:

If you want to go ice skating in Shenyang, there are lots of places to go in the winter. Nanhu Park and Beiling Park [1] both have lakes that are cleared for skating, weather permitting of course. At Beiling park there it may be possible to rent skates by the hour. Some of Shenyang’s universities have ice rinks as well. You can buy hockey, figure, and speed skates at many of the shops near Shenyang Sports Gymnasium.  [3]  Shenyang now has four indoor skating rinks.  Three are located in shopping malls:  Tiexi District Happy Family (铁西区兴隆大家庭,沈辽路), MIX-C Mall on Qing Nian Da Jie (万象城,沈河区青年大街), and Long zhi Meng Mall in Dadong District (龙之梦亚太中心,大东区).  Prices are aroung 60 yuan for two hours, including skate rental.

If you are interested in playing ice hockey, you'll be happy to know that the fourth rink is Liaoning Province's only dedicated hockey rink.  It's usually open from August to March.  As of April 2012, we are also able to play hockey in Long zhi Meng shopping mall after closing, so we now have year-round hockey!  The "Shenyang Ice Eagles" hockey club consists of a mix of foreigners and locals.  We skate three times a week, and periodically enter recreational tournaments with teams from other cities.  If you're coming to live in Shenyang, consider bringing your own equipment, especially skates.

Bei Fang Bookstores

Shenyang doesn’t have any particularly good foreign language bookstores. The largest and most well-known bookstore is called Bei Fang Bookstore (北方图书城 běifāng túshū chéng). This large, four-level store has a wide variety of books, maps, pictures, and study too...
