The Bund gets its Anglo-Indian name from the embankments built up to discourage flooding(a ban is an embankment in Hindi). The Bund area refers to a 1500-meter stretch along the Huangpu River, running from the Waibaidu Bridge in the north to Yan’an Road in the south.

The best way to get acquainted with Shanghai is to take a stroll along the Bund; it’s a showcase of the city’s semi-colonial past and its transformation in the new era.

The museum was founded in 1952 and was first open to the public in the former Shanghai Racecourse club house, now at 325 West Nanjing Road.[6]The founding collections came principally from three sources: a batch of artifacts gathered by the Communist 3rd Field Army during the civil war from accidental finds and confiscations of private property and brought to Shanghai upon the Communists' conquest of the city; artifacts confiscated by the customs service; items sold by private collectors due to political pressure during political purges and purchased by the government. The former Shanghai Municipal Museum was also merged into the new Shanghai Museum.
The Ming and Qing dynasties witnessed the heyday of Chinese furniture. The gallery shows a refined garden-like residence of that time. Even a simple chair demonstrates Chinese culture and etiquette.

First of its kind, the Gallery of Chinese Seals, reflects the importance of seals in history from the Western Zhou to the end of the Qing Dynasty.
