The Bomas of Kenya

Bomas of Kenya is a cultural tour of Kenya’s major ethnic groups, such as Mijikenda, Luo, Taita, Embu, Maasai, Kikuyu, Kamba, Kalenjin, Luhya, Kisii, Kuria to name just a few of the native peoples that are represented at the venue.

The word “boma” means “homestead”, and here you find replicates of traditional villages that provide interesting insight about each tribe’s societal structure, crafts, music, dancing and much more.

The site was founded in 1971 by the Kenya Tourist Development Corporation to preserve the ancient traditions of the Kenyan people by building local and international awareness and advocacy. The bomas are built using the same techniques that are used by local tribes, so the experience is truly authentic, much as you would find in the remote communities of Kenya. 

Daily performances include a selection of more than 30 traditional dances of the different ethnic groups in Kenya.

Nairobi, Kenya's capital and largest city, still conjures all the romance and adventure of its colorful colonial days. The city evolved from a humble camp for railway workers in 1899 to the capital of British East Africa by 1907. Today, Nairobi's rich history and tribal culture is brought to life in its excellent museums. The Karen Blixen Museum, in particular, is a big hit - especially with Out of Africa fans who come to see where the namesake Danish author toiled on her coffee farm in the beautiful Ngong Hills.

But even in such a bustling city, wildlife is a huge draw. This cosmopolitan capital is one of the only cities in the world to boast a safari park within its borders. A mere 15-minute drive from the skyscrapers of the city center, visitors can enjoy a classic African wildlife experience at Nairobi National Park. Lion, cheetah, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, rhinoceros, and buffalo roam the sun-soaked savanna here, and animal lovers can cuddle baby elephants and connect with giraffes at the excellent animal sanctuaries nearby.

Nairobi is also the gateway to the world-famous safari parks of Kenya, which have captivated adventure seekers for more than a century.

KARIBU NAIROBI!

Normally it's painfully expensive to go on a gorilla safari due to the high cost of permits (usually $600) but during the low season (April-May and November), the Ugandan Wildlife Authority discounts the price and I capitalised on this to offer a three-day gorilla tracking safari with a permit for a third of the usual price. With the safari including two travel days, we will track through the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest until the mountain gorillas are located, after which the group will spend one hour with the gorillas.

With park fees, transport and accommodation, Maasai Mara safaris is the best experience you can get in Kenya. During the great migration (expected between July and October this year) wildebeest herds cross from the Serengeti into the Mara and make several high-risk river crossings.

The simple camp with platform tents is near one of the gates to the Mara, the food – such as sausage and beans – is no-nonsense but included in the price and plentiful, and Kenya's famous Tusker beer can be purchased separately. Add on a night's stay at a guesthouse in Nakuru town and a game drive in the beautiful Lake Nakuru national park, famous for its flamingos but where many other animals can be seen.
