Cheung Po Tsai Cave, Cheung Chau

An 12-hour Islands Hopping tour, paying visits to the islands of Peng Chau, Lantau and Cheung Chau.

From your hotel we head for Central Ferry Piers to catch a fast ferry to Peng Chau.

By far the smallest of the inhabited islands of Hong Kong, at only 1.43 km2 Peng Chau packs many interesting sights. This island used to be a major industrial base of Hong Kong, only remnants of which remain now after all factories closed in the 1970s. The local movie theatre closed a little later.

Main attractions include several temples, the remains of the old factories and the Fisherman's Rock.

Next stop is Mui Wo on Lantau Island for lunch and a walk through the countryside, stopping at highlights like the Man Mo Temple and the Silvermine Waterfall.

The third island of the day is Cheung Chau, a dumbbell shaped island, with a population of about 23,000 people. It is known for its quiet lifestyle and rich cultural history. In early colonial times this island was separated in a British and a Chinese part, the British part largely serving as retreat and relaxation area for the colonists. To this day there are several Christian retreat centres on this island.

Major sights include the Pak Tai temple, an ancient rock carving and the Cheung Po Tsai (a notorious pirate who lived from 1786 to 1822) cave.

This tour we will take a fast ferry from Central to Cheung Chau, have a guided tour around the island taking in the various sights, enjoy a good seafood lunch or dinner (depending on the time) there, and take the ferry back to Central.

A 12-hour trip to Lantau Island and Cheung Chau island, two of Hong Kong's most beautiful outlying islands.

We start the day by taking the cable car up to the Big Buddha, where we explore Ngong Ping Village and Po Lin Monastery.

From there by bus or taxi down to Tai O fishing village, an authentic village famous for its stilt houses. We walk around the village and take a boat tour around the place.

Then we take taxi to Mui Wo, a rustic village on the other side of Lantau, travelling along the beautiful south side of the island. We have lunch in Mui Wo, followed by a walking tour (about 1 1/2 hours, including some steep inclines) around the village, visiting a.o. the Silvermine Waterfall, abandoned silvermine, Man Mo temple, and other highlights.

In the afternoon we take a ferry to Cheung Chau island, an island that still holds up many original Chinese traditions, for a walking tour (about 1 1/2 hours) and a good seafood dinner, before taking the ferry back to Hong Kong.
