Yungang Grottoes:Located at the southern foot of Wuzhou Mountain, some 16 km west of Datong city, Shanxi province, the Yungang Grottoes were built against the mountain and extend about 1 km (0.62 miles) from east to west. The construction of the caves was started under the auspices of the noted monk Tan Yao in 453 during the Northern Wei Dynasty and took 50 years to complete. Some 40,000 people, including Buddhists from what is present-day Sri Lanka, contributed to the huge endeavor.
Hanging Temple:Located about 65 kilometers from the city of Datong, about 1,500 years ago. The extant monastery was largely rebuilt and maintained in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).The Hanging Temple is suspended about 50 meters above the ground without the help of wooden pillars that are supposed to support when it was completed. Of course, there are pillars now which were added later because the temple seems to be so hazardous that many people dare not climb up. In fact, the pillars are moveable and can even be taken away. Even without the pillars, the temple has been very safe ever since its completion and successfully withstood winds and storms year after year, which amazed construction experts from countries, including Britain, Germany and Italy, and attracted them to come to exploration.
Grassland:Grassland in the Inner Mongolia is the representation of its natural beauty. Vast grasslands, including the Xilinguole Grassland, Gegentala Grassland are all good places for a grassland experience. The mushroom-like yurts, bright sky, fresh air, rolling grass and the flocks and herds moving like white clouds on the remote grassland, all contribute to make the scenery a very relaxing one. While visiting the grass land in the area of Inner Mongolia visitors may try different activities such as Mongolian wrestling, horse & camel riding, rodeo competitions, archery, visiting traditional families and enjoying the graceful Mongolian singing and dancing. The best time to visit the grassland is definitely during the traditional Mongolian Nadam Festival period when there is a better chance to both participate and feel the lively atmosphere of the grassland life.
