The Revolution Square

This is a complex tour of the communist legacy of Romania's capital, Bucharest. The tour follows the key moments of the communist regime, from its illegal seizing of power to its bloody end. We visit the major communist landmarks in the city and discuss the major decisions and projects of that time.

This tour will help you discover some of the most important landmarks built in Bucharest during the communist regime, a city that expanded almost double its size in this period, mainly due to Ceausescu’s vision of strong urbanization and destruction of the traditional village.

We will discuss the changes Bucharest went through during more than four decades of communist rule and visit the major places linked to the regime. The star of the tour is no doubt the megalomaniac Parliament Palace built in the 80’s with immense sacrifices for the population whose food, electricity and heat was severely rationalized.

The tour follows on the footsteps of the events of December 1989 when for days a mass public revolt took over the streets of Bucharest, Ceausescu escaping with an helicopter only to be shot together with his wide on Christmas day.

We will also explore through visits and practical examples the major changes done to the transportation network, the new architectural style and the overwhelming control of the state over the media. The highlights are: the World Record Palace of the Parliament, the Heroes' Mausoleum, the communist civic center, the Revolution and 21st of December Squares, the House of the Press and the Romanian Television.

The tour is led by a certified guide with a Bachelor in Political Science and solid knowledge of history and communism regimes.
