About this place

Kiev-Pechersk Lavra is a unique monastic complex, included in the UNESCO list of monuments of universal importance. It's like a real town in the heart of Kiev, there are many Orthodox churches, a monastery, several different museums. The complex includes the above-ground part (a complex of religious buildings) and underground part (the caves).

The first monks settled in the caves, it is hence the name Pechersk (Ukrainian, Pechera – cave). Lavra is an honorary title, which was awarded only to large and considerable monasteries. Starting from first caves dug in 11 century, within 9 centuries Kievo-Pechersk Lavra grew to majestic complex of churches and monasteries, producing not only believers, but also for ordinary tourists a very strong impression.
