'Fenghuang' is Chinese for 'Phoenix', the mythical bird of good omen and longevity that is consumed by fire to be re-born again from the flames. Phoenix Ancient Town is so called as legend has it that two of these fabulous birds flew over it and found the town so beautiful that they hovered there, reluctant to leave.
The town is situated on the western boundary of Hunan Province in an area of outstanding natural beauty where mountains, water and blue skies prevail. Upon arrival visitor will be impressed by its air of mystery, elegance and primitive simplicity. This is a world that is dominated by the colour green. The mountain slopes are covered with green foliage, the fields are green and even the Tuo Jiang River reflects the greenery. The bridges over the water and unique houses built on stilts display a harmony that is so often portrayed in traditional Chinese paintings. This is particularly true when mist pervades the scene in the early morning or after rain. It soon becomes apparent that the claim to being one of the two most beautiful towns in the whole of China is more than justified; the other town is Chang Ting in Fujian Province.
Phoenix Ancient Town is a wonderful example of what villages were like prior to the onset of modernization. Here dozens of alleys paved with flagstones run between the houses, each showing wear caused by the feet of generations of local people who have used them when going about their daily business. For the visitor, these alleys are the way to see the typical high gabled wooden houses built on stilts along the banks of the Tuo Jiang River at close quarters.
Stretching diagonally from the northwest to southeast of the town, Tuo Jiang River is a life force of the local people. Here in its waters women wash their clothes and the men fish with their nets, while on the bank food is prepared in much the same way as it has for centuries. The river also provides a means for boatmen to support their families by ferrying visitors up and down stream for sightseeing.
The Miao ethnic minority is predominantly settled here and a visit to a Miao village is a must when going to the town. The Miao women have a natural beauty that renders the use of cosmetics quite unnecessary. They love to dress in traditional blue garments set off with a white scarf. They love also their silver jewellery especially during festivals. Visitors will find a large array of hand made items of silver ornaments for sale in the local shops. Home made tie-dyes, printed and batik cloths are other local specialities that make wonderful souvenirs. The Miao are friendly and hospitable and like nothing more than to interact with visitors with a variety of traditional entertainments and activities. Food here also is different from that found elsewhere in China. Pickled red peppers are a particular local delicacy and their appetizing smell wafts from the many small family run restaurants.
Phoenix Ancient Town was home to the versatile writer Shen Congwen (1902-1988) who contributed greatly to the development of modern Chinese literature. Venerated by the local residents, the one time home and the tomb of this famous writer have become tourist attractions.
There are two other notable people from the town worthy of mention. The first is Xiong Xiling the famous philanthropist who was the first premier of the Republic of China (1921-1949) following the fall of the Manchu. The other famous citizen is Huang Yongyu, an outstanding contemporary painter in the traditional Chinese style. His frescoes illustrating Buddhist stories in the Zhunti Nunnery are a major tourist attraction.
Phoenix Ancient Town does not rely entirely upon natural beauty to attract the visitor for this ancient town with a history spanning 1300 years has a number of remarkable old gardens as well as distinctive residential buildings, elegant bridges and mysterious towers and pagodas. These architectural delights date from the Ming and Qing Dynasties (1644-1911). Those of special interest are the Wengchen Pavilion, Huang Si Qiao Castle, Tian Wang Temple, Da Cheng Hall, Chao Yang Palace, and the tomb of Shen Congwen and the residence of Xiong Xiling. Here too there are the North Gate and South Great Wall both excellent examples of municipal fortification.
In many ways, life has not changed here for centuries and this is typified by the tough, hard working yet simple-hearted people. The town offers the visitor from both home and abroad a view of a quite different China from anything experienced in the modern cities and large conurbations that are more widely known. We are sure that the opportunity to travel in such a picturesque region will be remembered as an experience of a lifetime.

Wulingyuan Scenic Area spreads out among Wulingyuan mountains in Zhangjiajie City, southwest of Hunan Province. It is about 400 kilometers (248.56miles) away from Changsha, the provincial capital. The whole area includes four parts: Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Yangjiajie Scenic Spot, Suoxi Valley and Mount Tianzi Nature Reserves with an area of 500 square kilometers (193 square miles). Owing to the neighboring plateau southwest of it and Dongting Lake to the east, the second biggest fresh water lake of China, Wulingyuan Scenic Area developed by the interaction of land elevation and depression and the cutting force of flowing water. It presents a unique landscape of high mountains, grotesque peaks, beautiful waters, deep gorges, marvelous caves and exuberant forest.
For many years Wulingyuan was unknown because it was hidden in the hinterland of the province. It was only in 1979 that Mr. Wu Guanzhong, a famous Chinese painter, discovered this magic land. In 1992, UNESCO added Wulingyuan to the World Heritage List.

Five Surprising Things You Can Pack to Make Your Next Trip Easier

Have you honed your packing skills to perfection? Do you prepare for a week-long jaunt to Europe with stylish neutral separates that fit in a carry-on sized wheely bag? Always bring a copy of your passport, a foreign adapter, and ear plugs for tuning out airplane noise? Are your travel-size toiletries at the ready in a zip-lock bag? You’re a pro! photo (click to enlarge) It’s for all you jet-setters out there that we’ve put together this quick list of five easy-to-pack items you might not have thought to bring with you, but whose presence could make your next trip even smoother.
1. Three simple things create a nifty traveler first-aid kit: a small packet of anti-bacterial hand wipes for cleaning minor cuts (and keeping hands clean of germs), a few Band-Aids in the event of scrapes or blisters, and the game-changer: Second Skin. If you know you’ll be doing a lot of walking or hiking, these moist pads are invaluable in maintaining your activity level when blisters threaten to sideline you.
2. Tokens from your country. We don’t advocate stuffing your suitcase with heavy or bulky trinkets from home, but a few small tokens can act as nice gestures to people who go out of their way to help you on your travels. Travel Channel Host Samantha Brown always brings along a few “I Love New York” t-shirts in her luggage for people who have a positive impact on her travels. I favour small Canada flag pins to hand out to friends I make along the way.
3. Pack a couple of your favourite granola, fruit or protein bars to stave off those “hangry” moments. Trying out local restaurants and new cuisine is one of the great pleasures of traveling. But how often does it happen that hunger drives you to pick the first place you see, rather than taking the time to find the perfect dining spot? Pack a tiny stash of snack bars, and you’ll be far more likely to dine exactly where and when it suits you.
4. For women, a colourful pashmina is worth its weight in gold (not that they weigh much!) They can serve as colourful accessories to brighten neutral travel outfits, cover-ups when entering places of worship, a soft blanket on a plane, or a warm shawl on a cool evening.
5. Contact lens cases are perfect travel containers for a few doses of non-prescription medication (we recommend prescription pills remain in their original labelled containers.) Gravol, Melatonin, and Tylenol fit perfectly inside a contact lens case, making these travel aids easy to store and access on a plane ride. The cases are also great for storing tiny, easy to lose things like earrings and ear-plugs.

10 Tips to Make your Private Tour Unforgettable!

1. One of the best aspects of taking a private tour is you get to customize the experience! Take advantage of being able to communicate with your guide to set expectations before your tour. This is your time and your guide wants you to be interested in what you’re seeing. So share your interests, likes and dislikes – it will help your guide customize the perfect tour for you.
2. Be prepared for poor weather and don’t let it get you down! Unfortunately, not every day is going to be a sunny day. But bad weather is actually a great time to have a private guide. Big bus tours have a hard time changing their itineraries, but your guide can alter your schedule at a moment’s notice, and will have all sorts of ideas for making the most of your time in their city, even with rain. You might end up seeing something fascinating you otherwise would have missed.
3. Wear comfortable shoes for walking, and dress appropriately: for weather, activity level and to respect local customs. Your guide can advise you on suitable clothing in advance of your tour.
4. Be open-minded and respect the local culture. We hear this a lot, but what exactly does it mean? In a nutshell, it means understanding that things are likely going to be different than at home – and that’s OK. Travelers who spend their whole time in judgment of different customs and behaviors end up complaining more about their trip than enjoying it.
5. ...and in a similar vein, try something new! Whether it’s a new food, drink or activity, challenge yourself to do one small thing on your tour that you’ve never done before.
6. Take the time to research where you’re going and let your guide know if there’s a particular place you want to see that might not be on everyone’s radar. One really interesting way of complementing this sort of research is by reading a novel or short story by a local author, set in the location you’re traveling to. It will help you tap into the local cultural scene and get you inspired to see the places in the book!
7. Once you’ve met your guide, ask questions and get the conversation flowing! Your guide has lots of knowledge to share, and it’s often more enjoyable and natural to learn through a conversation rather than as a passive listener.
8. Ask your guide to take photos of your group so no one’s missing from the picture. But don’t forget to take a photo with your guide too, to help you remember the person you spent this special day with. (We love it when travellers share these photos with us! Feel free to post your snapshots on our Facebook page anytime.)
9. Instead of exclusively using a car and driver to get around a city, if you are healthy and mobile consider exploring with your guide on foot, by bike or by public transit. A car can be convenient, but driving from place to place you are largely cut off from the things going on around you. Walking or cycling is slower and allows you to feel more a part of your surroundings. European cities tend to be compact and easy to explore without a vehicle. And many of the world’s major cities are also becoming more bike-friendly, offering dedicated cycling lanes and bike share programs. Rio, Paris, Copenhagen, Berlin, Amsterdam, London, Tokyo and New York City are all leading the cycling charge.
10. Benefit from your guide’s knowledge of their city and region for the rest of your time there. Before your tour is done, get recommendations for great neighbourhood restaurants, shops and entertainment – places to enjoy in the evening or the next day.
