Lifelong Sichuan resident Lili did not open Jah Bar to make money. He opened this riverside bar just last month to create a haven for travellers, musicians, artists, and free-thinkers. Whether they are local to Chengdu or just passing through Lili hopes they will stop by to join him and his extended group of friends to play music, share stories and tips, or just relax on the plentiful sofas. After many years spent as a painter, musician, worker, and outdoors lover, Lili now aims to run a bar which mirrors his minimal and simplistic lifestyle.  Soothing home brewed red tea, Qingdao beer, a special Jah Bar fried rice, and egg pancakes with ketchup on the side are available for just 10 Yuan.

The name Jah Bar actually has 3 meanings. The first refers to the obvious Rastafarian name for god. The second is ’jia’ (家), the Chinese word for home, and similar in sound to ’Jah’. This name reinforces Lili’s goal of creating a home-like atmosphere for all of his guests. The last is ’home’, which like the Chinese word, reiterates the same mission for all foreign guests.

Every Friday night is a live musical performance, often featuring Lili with his harmonica and guitar. The ambiance is perfect, and each patron brings a more interesting story than the next. Be sure to pay a visit to Jah Bar when in Chengdu.

How to get there: Jah Bar is located on the south side of the Funan river on Linjiang Lu (临江路) very close to Lao Nan Men Bridge. Jah Bar is across Jiangxi Jie, the main street, from the impossible-to-miss big boat. Walk south on Nan Da Jie (南大街), and go left as soon as you cross the river. From the south on Jiangxi Jie (浆洗街), make the right turn right as you hit the river. Jah Bar is just a few meters from the main street. Look for the bar’s small red lights.

The newly opened Bookworm is both a restaurant and English language library in one. Following in the steps of the original Bookworm in Beijing, the restaurant serves pan-European cuisine, and guarantees the use of only the finest and freshest produce from local farms. The bookworm’s American head chef boasts more than 20 years of experience in 5-star establishments. Eclectic salads, pasta dishes, and crepes are only a few of the treats on the menu, whose dishes are amusingly named after various literary notables. If you aren’t too hungry, you can still pop in at any time of day; bring in a book or take one out. Then, pick up some tea or coffee and settle into one of the Bookworm’s cushy chairs.

Directions: The Bookworm’s address is officially on the 2nd section of South Renmin Road (Renmin Nanlu, 人民南路二段), but it’s actually located on a side street headed west, not more than 50 meters from Renmin Lu. Walking south of Renmin Lu, cross the American Consulate Road, continue past Zoe’s BBQ on the right side, and then turn right. You can’t miss the Bookworm on the left side.

Cafe Firenze

Cafe Firenze serves Italian cuisine in the south end of Chengdu. It is just a few meters down from Zoe’s BBQ, and across the street from Gingko and the Western Tower. Expect to pay at least 40 Yuan per person at Cafe Firenze.

Located just 10 minutes walk from Tianfu Square and just a couple hundred meters from the river, the Soma youth hostel is a bit of a secret in Chengdu. Fang Chao Yang, the Yi minority owner of the hostel, is extremely proud of the clean rooms and bathrooms as well as his honest staff at the hostel. The hostel has a large common room on the top floor with a pool table, free internet, DVD player, free coffee, and very cheap beer for sale. There is even a rooftop balcony adjacent to the common room.

The hostel has been open for more than 13 years and features a staff of entirely Yi and Tibetan ethnic minorities. The word Soma is the name of a flower which grows in Yunnan, Sichuan, and Tibet in the region where the Yi people live.

The staff of the Soma can pick you up at the train station or at the Minshan hotel at the terminus of the 303 airport bus if you contact them in advance, so please do so.

Dorm beds, which are not cramped, cost 20 Yuan. The nicest double rooms with bathrooms cost up to 128 Yuan for 2 people. There are a range of prices for accomodation with and without bathrooms in between.

Directions: Walk south a few hundred meters and turn left onto HongZhaoBi. Stay on the left side of HongZhaoBi and then make the next left onto NanDaJie. The hostel is a few hundred meters down NanDaJie on the left side, you will see a sign.

REMEMBER TO CONTACT THE STAFF IN ADVANCE IF YOU WILL ARRIVE AT THE TRAIN STATION OR THE AIRPORT AND THEY CAN PICK YOU UP.

Vegetarian Restaurant at the Wenshu Monastery

This restaurant is the only vegetarian restaurant that I know of in Chengdu. It is located within the Wenshu Buddhist Monastery, hence it is vegetarian. I’ll have to agree with the Lonely Planet’s review which labels the cuisine as excellent. There is an enormous menu full of veggie and tofu dishes as well as many offering faux meat. The menu is in English too! Don’t be afraid of the spicy dishes which are measured with 1, 2, or 3 red peppers on the menu. I tried a few dishes that were of supposedly ’medium’ level spice and they were barely spicy at all.

Directions: The restaurant is inside the Wenshu Monastery on Xizhushi Jie, just off of Renmin Zhonglu. Entrance to the monastery is only 5 yuan. Once inside, walk towards the east side of the grounds (the right side) and you will find the restaurant in a few minutes. Buses 16 and 99 run along Renmin Lu, so hop off once you see the red walls of the monastery or see Xizhushi Jie (street).

Of the four most famous schools of culinery art in China (Beijing cuisine, Sichuan cuisine, Jiangsu cuisine, Guangdong cuisine), Sichuan cuisine boasts tongue-numbing, hot, delicate and fresh taste and a variety of flavors, as "each dish has its unique taste and no two dishes have the same flavor." Such spcial flavors as fish-flavored, gongbao (with peanuts), and water-boiled are incomparable at home and abroad.

"The teahouses in Sichuan top the world, and those in Chengdu Top Sichuan." This widespread saying not only points out the status of Chengdu's teahouses but also the inseverable ties between Chengdu culture and tea. Like bars in Paris and cafes in Vienna, teahouse add a touch of refinement and leisureliness to Chengdu, an ancient yet modern metropolis. The practice of driking tea prevailed in Sichuan as earlt as prior to the Qin and Han Dynasties.
