Famen Temple
Fanmen Temple was built in Easter Han Dynasty using to house the finger bone relics of the founder
of Buddhism Sakyamuni. The two characters "Fa Men" mean the initial approach to be a Buddhist.
There is a Pagoda inside the temple. In Sanskrit, pagoda is stupa means relic preserver. When
Sakyamuni had achieved his Nirvana, his bone ashes were told had been devided into 84,000
parts and sent to all over the world by King Asoka who was a devoted Buddhist. There was a
pagoda built for each piece of Sakyamuni's bone relic. Famen Temple is one of them that is
why Famen Temple enjoyed the reputation of " The forefather of pagodas and temples in
central Shaanxi province".
