The Seven Rila Lakes are a group of lakes of glacial origin, situated in the northwestern Rila Mountains in Bulgaria. They are the most popular group of lakes in Bulgaria. The lakes are situated between 2,100 and 2,500 metres above sea level.
Each lake carries a name related to its most characteristic feature. The highest one is called Salzata ("The Tear") due to its clear waters that allow visibility in depth. The next one in height has the name Okoto ("The Eye") after its almost perfectly oval form.

This is a one-day trip to the biggest Orthodox Monastery - Rila monastery.
The monastery is one of the nine UNESCO heritage list sites to visit in Bulgaria and every year now attracts more than 1 000 000 visitors!
The tour includes my services as a tour guide as well as a driver. The excursion lasts about 8 hours and starts usually in Sofia. The total mileage is about 260 km both ways. Halfway to the monastery we make a short break for a coffee and then, one hour later we will be at the monastery gates.

You will be fascinated by the grand view once you go through the gates, seeing the church form early 19th century and one of the highest peaks "protecting" the monastery just outside it's walls.
The wonderful gallery with bright murals is the other precious view you will never forget. And of course the whole history of the monastery, tightly connected with the rest of the Bulgarian history ....
All of this in just one day....
If people like, I can recommend a nice and cosy restaurant for lunch, with fresh trout and salads, pancakes and ..coffee :)
