Badlands of Castle Peak
The Castle Peak range is very rough, the desolate landscapes of heavily weathered terrain here are unique for Hong Kong. These landscapes are called badlands for good reason. The area was used as live firing practice range for the British military. It is still officially designated as firing range, but rarely used.
The area is largely devoid of trees, and barely anything else grows there. It is as if walking on another planet. The rocks here are granite, which erodes rapidly in subtropical conditions, resulting in very rough and hostile terrain with barely any shelter.

We start the hike either in Tuen Mun with a visit to Tsing Shan Monastery and then up the summit of the Castle Peak (583m tall), or in Ha Pak Lai Village and then via a beautiful river and up a waterfall to enter the range. We will walk by natural highlights such as the Bread Rock, the Heart Rock and the Moon Gully.
Bring packed lunch and sufficient water, as there is nothing available there.
Special notes for this hike: the terrain is dominantly light grey to white in colour, wearing sunglasses with UV filter is recommended. Due to the high exposure this hike will be cancelled when the Very Hot Weather warning is in force.
