Sha Lo Tung
A mostly abandoned area, with two villages: Cheung Uk and Lei Uk. These two villages have been declared a Grade II historical building, however no maintenance is being done at all to preserve these typical Hakka-style houses. In weekends a small shop selling refreshments to hikers opens.
The area is a plateau, surrounded by higher hills. It drains towards Hok Tau Reservoir in the north. Part of the area is swampland.

Pat Sin Leng
The Pat Sin Leng range is one of the most famous hikes in Hong Kong, and also one of the more demanding walks. The name "Pat Sin Leng" means "Peaks of Eight Gods", as it is a mountain ridge with eight distinct peaks. The views from this range are among the best of Hong Kong.
Geologically these mountains are interesting as they are part of a major escarpment, where part of the terrain has been lifted by tectonic forces.

The hike follows the mountain ridge though some beautiful mountain landscapes, and finally passes by Sha Lo Tung, an all but abandoned village, the houses of which have grade II heritage status. Here you can take a closer look at typical Hakka-style homes, and (weekends and holidays only) enjoy a bowl of the local delicacy dou-fu-fa, a sweet tofu pudding.

Hok Tau Reservoir and Sha Lo Tung
This route starts at Lau Shui Heung reservoir, from where we walk via the Fire Lookout (map marker 2) to Hok Tau Reservoir, one of the most idyllic reservoirs of the New Territories. This are two small irrigation reservoirs, set in beautiful natural surroundings.

After that we walk through the lush woods towards the wetlands of Sha Lo Tung, an abandoned Hakka village in a very tranquil environment. The buildings of the two main villages here are rated grade II historical buildings, and the area is a major habitat of dragonflies and damselflies. Explore the typical Hakka houses, and see how the people there lived.
In weekends a shop selling the local delicacy dou-fo-fa (sweet tofu pudding) and other refreshments opens in Sha Lo Tung.
From there we walk down via Fung Yuen, where we may pay a visit to the Fung Yuen Butterfly Reserve, and take transport to Tai Wo MTR station.
The tour will take about four hours.
