Is it difficult to learn Chinese characters?

A lot of foreign travelers ask me "Is it difficult to lean chinese characters" ?

Chinese characters are not alphabet as western languages used.Each character represents a separate word, and Chinese characters indicate both the meaning and the sound for a whole word.

It is a little bit difficult , isn't it ?
