Afrotiri
Akrotiri is an excavation site on Santorini. Its existance dates back to the Bronze Age and the Minoan civilization. Theran erupted some 1,500 years BC and buried Akrotiri. Since it was buried during a long time it was protected from the weather influence and thus well preserved. Spyridon Marinatos started the excavation of the site in the 1967 and after a number of frescoes, pottery, buidings and dreinage systems were discovered. There are theories that this eruption inspired Plato´s story of Atlantis. Many artifacts found at this site are preserved in the Museum of Prehistoric Thera. Even though the site was buried because of the volcano eruption and thus the incident resmbles to the Pomepei it is believed that the evacuation of the site had been executed since no volcano victims from the period were found.
