Santorini (Σαντορίνη)
Santorini or classically Thera is one of the most beautiful islands in the world. It is located in the Aegean Sea, and it forms the largest island in the Santorini archipelago which consists of Thera, Thirasia, Aspronsi, Palea and Nea Kameni. It is a volcanic island which is also home to the thirteen villages and to almost 14,000 residents.
Volcanos were very active in this territory in prehistoric times, and this island was created after the eruption of one. This one is the only volcano in the world with the caldera in the sea. There was one more large eruption called the Minoan eruption or the Thera eruption that occurred 3,600 years ago. There is also a theory that the Minoan eruption is the source of the legend of Atlantis.
There is also one interesting fact about Santorini. Since the island was created as a result of volcanic eruption the inner part of Santorini coast is a precipice covered by the sea which at places drops over 300 meters.
Santorini is a tourist paradise with climate perfect for the entire year tourism activities even though a periode between December through March is considered off the season.
What is a Greek island without beaches, right? The most popular beaches here are the Red Beach, the Black Beach, and the White Beach, Vilchada, Amoudi, Perivolos, Perissa beach, Monolithos, Baxedes, Pori, Mesa pigadia, and the Agios georgios.
There are a lot of activities which people in Santorini love to do like the walk along the caldera, climbing up the Thira to see the amazing view that stretches all around the beautiful archipelago. People can also organize a lot of other activities like the boat excurisions, snorkeling, horseback, and other leisure activities.
