Wa ethnic dance of "swinging hair"

Called “mgraoh si wuad haog” in the Wa ethnic language, the dance of "swinging hair" used to be a kind of self-entertaining dance o f the Wa ethnic girls.

In the Wa ethnic society, girls who have long hair are traditionally deemed beauties. According to the local aesthetics, whoever has the blackest, longest and thickest hair is naturally the most beautiful. After washing their hair, Wa girls get used to comb and swing their hair to dry on balconies or riverside, thus the dance.

In May 2006, the Wa ethnic swinging-hair dance was inscribed into the intangible cultural heritage list of Yunnan Province.
