Upper Ragusa

Ragusa earned the name of UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its Baroque heritage. This city hides a very long history that is shown not only by both prehistoric necropolis and paleochristian catacombs but also by its medieval ruins that are part of its baroque dwellings and churches. However, the contemporary history of Ragusa is quite charming as well.

Many prestigious representatives of the early twentieth-century architecture have contributed to the artistic decoration of the city. For instance, Ernesto Lapadula e Ugo Tarchi, just to mention a few, left their signatures on the most important buildings in Ragusa. Ragusa has three souls that emanate their halo through the ruins of the pre-earthquake city, the paramount monuments of Baroque Ragusa, which are listed as UNESCO World Heritage, and the monuments and government buildings of the twentieth-century Ragusa.

These buildings show the expertise of twentieth-century architects who had renovated the city that became the province administrative centre in 1926. During our tour among these monuments, we will go through the different steps of the development of Ragusa.

We will have a pleasant walk starting from Upper Ragusa to the centre of ancient Ibla.
