Religious Activities and the Places in Datong

Buddhism

　　The upper Huayan Temple in the southwest corner of the city as the major place where Buddhist activities are held Besides prayers and recitation of Buddhist scriptures in the morning, noon and evening every day,several major Buddhist services are held there during the year. During the ceremonies many Buddhist men and women come to present vegetarian food to the Buddha and to pray for the release from suffering and cycle of birth and death.

　　

Islam

　　The activity is conducted in Datong Mosque ,The main hall of the Mosque, built in A.D.628 with a floor space of 1600 square meters, is a typical combination of Chinese and Arabic culture, The Islamic worshipers recite the Koran there every day, The festival of fast-breaking (or Ramadan),the corban Barium and Mohammed′birthday Celebration are held each year, prayer service is held every Friday.

　　

Christianity

　　Services are done every Sunday morning, and Thursday afternoon in Datong Christian Church. There is a meeting between the brothers. On Christmas and Easter big ceremonies are organized there.

　　

Catholicism

　　Mass is held in Datong Catholic Church at 7:00 every morning. The church was built in 1870.

Daoism

　　The ceremonies for the Eight Immortals and the birthday celebration of laozi are held in Chaoyangsi Taoist Temple on the eighth day of the first lunar month and fifteenth day of the second lunar month.
