Stroller’s is a small, dark pub with a largely foreign clientele. There’s usually decent music playing, and the food is pretty good, although a bit pricey. Choices include pizza, steak, and traditional appetizers. Almost every inch of the place is covered with European (mostly German) memorabilia. Stroller's is one of the oldest bars in Shenyang, and most foreigners are familiar with it.          *How to get there:* Ask a taxi driver to go to the Royal Hotel (皇城酒店 huáng chéng jiǔ diàn), then walk 50 meters northeast and you’re there.   /Photo by Jerry Wang, 2007/

San Marco’s Bar is noisy and busy pretty much every night of the week. The customers here are mostly Chinese, but most bar-going foreigners make the occasional stop. San Marco’s has something of a “variety show” 7 nights a week, which mostly consists of performers singing Chinese pop songs to unnecessarily loud karaoke recordings, and large men guzzling beer by the pitcher. The entertainment can be amusing, but the “variety” tends to be pretty much the same night after night. On the weekends they often have special performances. One of the more unique ones includes a very “exotic” dancer and a live snake. 
 
This bar is worth a visit, as it can be fun with a large group of friends, or with that “special someone.” Some people complain that the music is much too loud, but if you go to the back of the bar farthest from the stage, it is quiet enough to have a normal conversation.

Food: A decent selection of greasy, overpriced food is available. Most people eat dinner elsewhere, but if you’re in a pinch it’ll do.

Sophie's World Bar

       Until recently, this small laid-back pub was the most popular stop for many of Shenyang’s Westerners. Over the past couple years however, Sophie’s has lost some of its popularity, partially due to the addition of new bars around town.  Nevertheless, if you’re looking for a laid-back place to drink and hang out, Sophie’s is still a good bet. Drinks are cheap; the manager, Johnny, is kind and helpful; and Sophie’s is still one of the best known bars among Shenyang’s foreigners, so if you’re new in town it’s a good place to start out. 
        
        It’s worth noting that there often seems to be no rhyme or reason to Sophie’s busy hours.  The bar will sometimes be packed with people on a Tuesday night, but sit virtually empty on Saturday.

Very limited food menu includes peanuts and instant noodles. Plan on eating dinner somewhere else. 
 
Location:  In Shenhe District (沈河区) about 1-2 km south of Government Square, on the corner of Er Jing Jie (二经街) and Ba Wei Lu (八纬路).  Simply ask a taxi driver for "èr jīngjiē, bā wěilù".

If it’s too early to go home after hopping round the Lan Kwai Fong circuit then head for Insomnia. During the early evening the wide open bar makes a great spot for great for people-watching, especially during parties like New Year’s eve. At the rear of the bar, there is a dance floor and live bands have been known to perform here.
