Xujiahui used to be one of the earliest places for Catholicism to spread in Shanghai. It could be traced back to Xu Guangqi, the senior official in Ming dynasty. He might also be the first Catholic in China. Then he invited a foreign priest Guo Jujing to start preaching in his hometown Xujiahui and since then there were more and more believers. Afterwards, the Society of Jesus established a church in Xujiahui named St.lgnatius Cathedral of Zi-ka-wei. As Catholics increased, the churchmen decided to build a new church, known as Xujiahu Catholic Church today, which is a typical French Gothic architecture of masonry structure with twin-spires. Two 57-meters-high bell towers face each other north and south with two crosses on the spires into the sky, which is amazing.

For foreigners who travel all the way to Shanghai in pursuit of their ' Far-East dreams', it bears the image of 'the First Building in the Far East'. For architecture lovers, it is the first modern-style building in Shanghai. It was also the first genuine skycraper over 10 stories in Shanghai. While for the Shanghai locals, the green pinnacle of it, up till now, is still an indispensable landmark of the Bund.

The original owner of the building was Jewish rich man, Victor Sassoon. The most floors were all owned by Cathay Hotel. It did hold a leading position due to its luxury and magnificence, which had attracted many celebrities from all over the world. In 1956, Cathay Hotel was renamed as Peace Hotel . In 2010,  after the large-scale renovation, Peace Hotel resumed its business, reliving the original image to its largest extent.
