French Concession
French Concession ...
French Concession – It refers to the district governed by French during the colonial period (1849-1943). Despite rampant re-development over time, this area retains a distinct character. Many villas were once the residences of celebrities like Sun Yat-sen, Mao Zdong, Soong Ching-ling and Zhou Enlai, etc. Xintiandi and Tianzifang are also in the area. Xintiandi is a bistro-like complex with cafes, boutiques and bars there, while Tianzifang is an creativity-oriented district where you can find a lot of studios, galleries, handcraft workshops and designer's shops. Reproducing the old residential quarters known as Shikumen or Longtang, both Xintiandi and Tianzifang are iconic attrations in the city.

With over 1,700 years of history, the Longhua Temple, together with the now slanting Longhua Pagoda, is one of the most ancient and largest Buddhist monasteries in Shanghai. There enshrined a diversity of popular Buddhism images, such as Sakyamuni, Laughing Buddha, four Bodhisattvas including Goddess of Mercy, four Heavenly Kings, five hundred Arhats and twelve Devas, etc. some of which you can hardly find in other temples in Shanghai.
Besides, the activity of striking the temple bell on the eve of the Lunar New Year for festival is the longing among most Buddhism adherents. Existent so far for over 300 years, Longhua Temple Fair, held on March 3rd of the lunar calendar every year, is a fixed tourist activity during Shanghai Tour Festival. Huge crowd of people are in the Temple Fair and it is extraordinarily hustle and bustle with excitement.
