About this place

Dar El Makhzen is a former Sultanate Palace which houses the Museum of Moroccan Arts and the Museum of Antiquities. Sultan Moulay Ismail built the palace in the Kasbah in the 17th century. This same palace was for a while a home to the exiled and the last sultan of Morocco, Moulay Hafid. Even the governors of Portugal and Spain lived here for some period. Inside of the building one can see two courtyards, fountains, arabesques and wooden ceilings.

The Museum of the Moroccan Arts exhibits art work from all over the country while the Museum of Antiquities displays finds from ancient Roman sites. A treasury, Bital el-Mal has a beautiful painted ceiling which dates from the 18th century.
