Lingua Franca

Few foreigners apart from long-term resident expatriates ever learn to speak Shanghainese and even in the city itself Mandarin-more commonly referred to nowadays as putonghua or common speech-is used as the everyday lingua franca of the many diverse Chinese people who made Shanghai their home.
