French concession area in Shanghai

The French Concession came into being in the mid-19th century, but most of the buildings that define the area today were built with European money in the 1920s-1940s. The style is an international one, blending European influence with Chinese living habits. The area is interesting because it is well-preserved, historic, but as yet only partly (re-)gentrified. You can see some fine examples of traditional architecture set in a bustling and thriving Chinese neighborhood, including ultra-functional Bauhaus, 1930s "Streamline" style and more classically influenced Deco styles.
