      In China’s history, there are 4 famous French Concessions. They are Tianjin French Concession, Guangzhou French Concession, Hankou French Concession and Shanghai French Concession. Well, among these 4 French Concessions, Shanghai French Concession is the biggest, earliest and most prosperous one.

      Shanghai French Concession established in 1849. You know in 1840, the opium war opened the door of China, and from then China began to experience colony era. England, France, Germany, Japan, and so on, these countries settle down in China’s land and to get the authority as in their own countries. Even inside the concession, Chinese government don’t have right to punish the foreigner who did some illegal things. It means these concessions just like their some country inside of China. But it is the

        Chinese land. Shanghai French Concession first expand in 1900, second time in 1914 was expand a lot. At 20’s, Shanghai French Concession became the best living quarters. Compare to other countries robbed Chinese economy and politic right, France seems not interested in these. They like to show their culture. They built many houses and churches on their concession. Shanghai French Concession finished in July, 1943.

    Wang Jingwei Warlord political retook it. From then what called No.8 district. Now most site in Xujiahui district. The colony time last almost 100 years. Today we still can see many great houses and lots of former residence of famous people. Such as Sun-Zhongshan, Jiang-Jieshi, Zou-Enlai, Jiang Family…
