Hall of Joyful Longevity
Completed in 1772, the Hall of Joyful Longevity served as the dwelling place for Emperor Qianlong after his dethronement. During the reign of Emperor Guangxu, Empress Dowager Cixi made its western chamber her bedroom.
Well of the Pearl Concubine
In 1900, the Eight-power Allied Forces invaded Beijing, and Empress Dowager Cixi and Emperor Guangxu fled westwards to Xi'an. Before leaving, Cixi ordered the Pearl Concubine, a consort of Emperor Guangxu, to be thrown into a well in the Forbidden City, and hence the name.
Corner Towers
The Corner Towers are four defensive structures at the four corners of the Forbidden City. It is said that their design drew inspiration from grasshopper cages.
