The Uneven Development of Meizhou City

Meizhou, a comparatively under-developed city in Northeastern Guangdong Province, was once the second major city of the province, and during the Anti-Japanese War and the Civil War, it contributed substantially to the victory of the CPC in Southern China. However, ever since the reform and opening-up, it has been left behind and even within its own territory, the social development is far from even. While the cities and towns are not much lagged behind, the countryside remains backward and life in such areas remains primitive.
