Chengdu Climate & Weather

Chengdu’s climate is rather steady and predictable, albeit tough to take at times. There are roughly four seasons in Chengdu, but it basically never freezes or snows in winter. Winter often feels cold though, as Chengdu buildings are not built with central heating, so some homes still feel quite cold in the winter. Winter temperatures range from 5-15° C (40-60° F).

Spring and fall are generally very pleasant. Spring sees a bit of rain, but not an overwhelming amount. Local citizens flock to parks, teahouses, and other outdoor locales to drink tea, play cards, exercise, or just the laze the day away. The only down side is the lack of blue sky and sun that sometimes plagues Chengdu. A combination of humidity, pollution, and clouds blowing off the Tibetan Plateau contributes to Chengdu’s numerous overcast days. Spring and fall temperatures are roughly 15-25° C (60-80° F). 

Summer is hot and humid. Expect sweat and stickiness. Locals still try to get outside whenever possible, but more commonly at night for cold tea or beer drinking or to sweat out some hotpot. In summertime expect temperatures from 20-35° C (70-100° F).

A lot of locals are actually quite fond of Chengdu’s seemingly year round humidity, as they believe it is very beneficial to their skin. 

For those traveling around Sichuan, remember that the altitude, temperatures, and climate will and can change drastically for places such as Jiuzhaigou, Kangding, Litang, or Emei Mountain.
