Shanghai City Central Youth Hostel

What’s in a name? The Shanghai City Central Youth Hostel is actually more of a hotel and it’s not in the city centre. However it is in Shanghai and to be fair they do have dorm rooms, 4 beds to a room, 60 RMB per bed. Most of the building is given over to private rooms, a standard room (one double bed, 198RMB), a  double room (two single beds, 218RMB) and a triple room (240RMB). If this seems pricey then bare in mind this is unlike many hostels in China, even the communal bathrooms are spotlessly clean and the communal areas are fresh and airy. Also off-peak all rooms are subject to discounts, at the time of writing dorm beds were 60 RMB and all other rooms at least 100 RMB cheaper than their marked price, ask when you book. Although located a little far away from the action the nearby Caoyang Road Metro station is just three stops from both the main railway station on line 3 or 4 and 30-40 RMB taxi fare from Hongqiao airport. The bar is also perfectly pleasant, drinks starting at 10 RMB.
