Note: There are many different English translations of ’明孝陵’, including “Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum,” “Xiaoling Tomb of the Ming Dynasty,” “Ming Xiaoling,” “Xiaoling Tomb,” and “Ming Tomb.” We will call it the “Ming Tomb” to keep it simple, but keep in mind that you may come across the other translations.

Ming Tomb

Nanjing became the capital of China when Zhu Yuanzhang founded the Ming Dynasty in 1368. During his reign, Zhu Yuanzhang built the great city walls of Nanjing, the imperial palace, and his future tomb - the Ming Tomb in Nanjing. The Ming Tomb is a certified UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a must-see for travellers to Nanjing.

Leading up to the impressive Ming Tower is the long, winding “sacred path”. You will also pass other impressive structures including Square City (built in 1413), Imperial Tablet Hall (1699), and the Sacrificial Palace (1383). The first two legs of the path are lined with pairs of stone statues of lions, camels, elephants, unicorns, xiezhi, and kylin as well as four pairs of ministers and generals who have accompanied the buried majesty in perpetuity.

Zhu Yuanzhang and his wife are actually not buried in the tower (which is why it is called a tower and not a mausoleum). Instead they are buried behind it in the treasure mound – a forested hill that is surrounded by a 7 meter high, 1000 meter long circular wall of bricks.

Plum Blossom Hill

Plum Blossom Hill takes its name from the pink plum blossoms that blanket the hill when they are in bloom. To the south of Plum Blossom Hill across the sacred avenue are Plum Blossom Valley and a youth hostel.

Purple Cloud Lake

Purple Cloud Lake is an ideal spot to spend an afternoon relaxing outdoors. Not suprisingly, “No Swim” signs lining the edge of the lake are no deterrence to many locals that enjoy the waters. That being said, it should be known that many people have drowned in the lake’s deep waters.

How To Get There

The Ming Tomb area is quite easy to locate. It is a good starting place from which to move on towards the hiking trails further up the mountain and to other tourist attractions located along the south face of Purple Mountain.

Bus #20, 游1 (travel 1, you 1), 游2 and 游3 all stop at several locations bordering the Ming Tomb scenic area. The Square City bus stop is the best place to start a scenic walk up the sacred path towards the Ming Tower. The bus stations on the east of the scenic area are convenient for leaving the area or for reaching other sections of Purple Mountain.

Unknown to most, there is actually a way to get to Ming Tomb area from a path above. This path splits off from the hiking trail that connects the observatory with the mountain top. See the Purple Mountain article for more info.

On the final leg of the path up to the Ming Tower there is a shop that sells excellent detailed maps of the entire Ming Tomb area.

Purple Mountain

Purple Mountain is known as the “lung of Nanjing” and for good reason. This massive, forested park area situated within Nanjing boasts fresh and cool air compared to the muggy, polluted city center.

There are loads of tourist attractions within Purple Mountain. Each of these destinations may be considered a go-to destination on its own. It is not possible to visit every last site on Purple Mountain in one day or even in a couple of days.

Most of the main tourist attractions are on the south side of the mountain. Hiking trails crisscross the mountain in every direction.

Hiking

The mountain contains a huge network of paths. There are several entrances and from each entrance, paths converge and criss-cross all the way to the top of the mountain. Neither English nor Chinese maps encompass the entire network of paths on Purple Mountain. Signs along the paths on Purple Mountain are difficult to decipher even for people fluent in Chinese.

Taiping Road Entrance and the Tramline

There are many buses that stop at White Horse Park (白马公园) on Taiping Road (太平路) and Longpan Road (龙蟠路). Buses that stop at White Horse Park include numbers 125, 44, 79, 48, 308 and 315.

From the White Horse Park bus stop a 15 minute walk up the road takes you to the tramline station and marks the official beginning of the trail. Buses 20 and Y3 (游3) travel right past White Horse Park on Taiping Lu (太平路) and up to the tramline entrance.

The Tramline

The tramline runs from 9:00am-4:30pm Monday to Friday and 8:30am-5:30pm Saturday and Sunday. The ride takes about 30 minutes to reach the mountain top and about 15 minutes to reach the observatory. Tram tickets cost 25 yuan per adult and 15 yuan for children under 1.3 meters tall.

Hiking from the Tramline Entrance Area to The Observatory and Mountain Top

Walking up the slowly ascending road to the observatory takes 45 minutes if you maintain a brisk pace and do not take any breaks. If you are not sure whether or not you want to hike all the way up the mountain, remember that you will have another opportunity to hop on the tramline from the observatory. If you want to continue hiking, follow the small, unkept path just to the left of the entrance to the observatory. This path leads to a 3-path intersection. Turn right and walk about 50 meters to get to the tramline. Keep going straight to head for the main peak of the mountain. From this point on, just keep heading upwards on the main path or on one of the several smaller trails. Hiking up the main path should take another 45 minutes without breaks. Another spot on the main path leads down towards the Ming Xiaoling Tomb.

Yingtuo Village Entrance

On the northwest side of Purple Mountain, the Yingtuo Village entrance leads to a steeper and more direct route to the peak. Thin stairways lead all the way to the top of the mountain. However, these stairs can become fairly busy when the weather is pleasant.

To find the Yingtuo Village entrance, follow Bancang Street (板仓街) to Yingtuo Cun, (Yingtuo Village, 樱驼村). The entrance is rather insignificant (see picture). If you don’t watch for the road you might think it’s just another alley.

Linggu Pagoda to The Mountain Peak

A gently sloping cement and stone road leads all the way from the mountain peak to the Linggu Pagoda. It takes 1.5 hours to walk this route if you do not take breaks. Likely because there are no notable viewpoints along this route, it is very lightly travelled.

Mountaintop Park (山顶公园)

The park at the top contains a large Buddha statue and a small clearing. Tickets to this park cost 4 yuan. Tickets are free for children under 1 meter, adults over 70, and people with physical handicaps. Those seeking only the premiere, most worthwhile attractions can certainly skip this one.

Tips

For 120 yuan you can purchase a year card that allows you to access all of the attractions listed below except for Underwater World. This card is well worth the money even if you are only planning to visit these attractions once. The card can be purchased at the entrances to any of these areas, however you must bring a passport sized photo. If you do not have a photo you can pick up 8 photos for 20 yuan at a store near the ticket booth for Sun Yat-sen’s Mausoleum. You can also pick up photos at a booth which is in front of Underwater World and near one of the entrance gates to the Ming Xiaoling Scenic Area.

Water and other refreshments cost about twice as much on the mountain as they do nearer to the ground. For example, a bottle of water costs 2 yuan near the bottom but costs 3.5 yuan at the top.

Nanjing is almost always foggy and/or smoggy, but if you plan on staying in Nanjing for an extended period of time, try to wait for a clear day to hike up the mountain.

Most tourist attractions are on the south side of the mountain. Most can be reached by bus and some require a short hike as well.

Originally, the drum tower was used to signify the changing of the guard. On rare instances it was also used to warn the populace of an emergency such as an impending attack or fire. From its hilltop setting, the drum tower allowed for an incredible view of the city in years past. However, the view now seems quite limited due to the high rise office and apartment buildings.

On the third floor there is a collection of photos depicting the old Nanjing. Some photos date back to as early as 1888. For a bit of a fun challenge, examine the old pictures and try to figure out which area of Nanjing they are from.

The drum tower lies on Beijing Xi Lu (北京西路) in the Drum Tower district (Gulou, 鼓楼区). It is adjacent to a large traffic circle that is at the junction of Beijing Dong Lu (北京东路), Beijing Xi Lu (北京西路), Central Road (Zhongyang Lu, 中央路), Zhongshan Bei Lu (中山北路) and Zhongshan Lu(中山路). It is also within walking distance of the Gulou subway station.

There are a few different convenience store chains in Nanjing. There is no real noticeable difference between them in terms of the products they carry. Here’s a list of some basic categories of items found at these convenience stores.

-Edibles such as beverages, treats, chips, etc.
-Some drug-store items such as pads and tampons.
-Beer, wine and baijiu. There are even some fairly expensive bottles of liquor there at times. Note that the beer is usually not kept cold.
-Some hot food such as meat balls on a stick and tea eggs.

Su Guo is the largest chain of convenience stores in Nanjing. They have stores that range from convenience store size to grocery store size.

A little known fact about Su Guo is that they will rent umbrellas for free! Give Su Guo a 10 yuan deposit to borrow the umbrella and they return to you the 10 yuan when you bring it back.

Holes in the Wall

Little “holes in the wall” sell beverages, alcohol, and assorted snacks and treats. A "hole in the wall’ is the often the smallest shop imaginable and are found everywhere. Most of these holes in the wall are not very busy, because Chinese people don’t trust them. However the ones next to the Nanjing University foreign students dormitory (Xiyuan) are always busy thanks to the reliable foreign customers.

There are other types of “holes in the wall” including ones that specialize in cigarettes and liquor.

Zhonghua Gate

This gate is the Southern gate of the whole city wall, as well as the largest castle gate in the world. The whole city wall is about 33km and took about 20 years to finish it.

Nanjing has many famous specialty foods. Some of these are unique to Nanjing and others are found all over China but get a special twist in Nanjing.

Duck

The quality and quantity of duck eaten in Nanjing has earned it one of it’s many nicknames - "Yadu" (鸭都) or "Duck Capital".

Nanjing Salty Duck (Nanjing Yanshui Ya, 南京盐水鸭) Nanjing Salty Duck has been produced in Nanjing for over 1000 years and is widely thought of as the number one Nanjing specialty. The skin is lightly coloured and the meat is tender. Bagged Salty Ducks can be found in all the tourist markets. Fresh ducks can be bought at butchers shops and grocery stores.
Baked Duck (Shao Ya, 烧鸭) This is less famous than the Salty Duck but more likely to be popular with foreigners. It is soaked in dark sweet and salty sauce to add flavour. Fresh Shao Ya can be bought in butcher shops and some grocery stores.
Duck Blood and Sweet Potato Starch Noodle Soup (Yaxue Fensi Tang, 鸭血粉丝汤) This soup contains congealed blocks of ducks blood and thin noodles made from sweet potato starch. It is a dish that is loved by some and avoided by others. Duck Blood Soup can be found at many specialty restaurants such as Yingshi on Lion’s Bridge.

Dumplings

Fried Beef Dumplings (Niurou Goutie, 牛肉锅贴) They are what they sound like – Oily but delicious fried beef dumplings. Perhaps this dish is not native to Nanjing but some will swear that the fried beef dumplings in Nanjing are the best. These can be found at small hole-in-the-wall vendors across the city. Maxiangxing, near Hunan Road serves Fried Beef Dumplings in a seemingly cleaner environment.
Steamed Dumplings (Zhenjiao, 蒸饺) Steamed dumplings are found all over China but Nanjing’s steamed dumplings are made to be less oily. Try the pork (猪肉) and fragrant mushroom (香菇) steamed dumplings. Steamed dumplings can be found in the same places that the fried dumplings are found.
Soup Dumplings (Tangbao, 汤包) Dumplings with chicken broth inside them are a favourite of both locals and visitors. Soup dumplings can be found in many restaurants. One of the more popular restaurants can be found on Lion’s Bridge. They do not sell any dishes besides soup dumplings and duck blood soup.

Other Meaty Dishes

Sour Vegetable Fish Soup (Suancai Yu, 酸菜鱼) The spicy “Sour Vegetable Fish” soup actually comes from Sichuan province, but it has gained such popularity in Nanjing that it is considered a Nanjing specialty by many. A big bowl of Sour Vegetable Fish makes a good centerpiece for a meal. It can be found in most restaurants.
Crawfish (Xiao Longxia, 小龙虾) A big bowl of spicy crawfish is a meal on its own. It is often complimented with some small snacks or thin bread. Crawfish can be found year long, but the large fresh ones can usually only be found between May and October. It can be bought in grocery stores and restaurants. Indeed, some restaurants only sell crawfish. There is one restaurant on Lion’s Bridge that specializes in crawfish.
Return to Sauce Tofu (Hui Lu Gan, 回卤干) This tofu is first stif-fried in excessive oil and then placed back in a broth to be boiled. The result is something similar to fried tofu except with a soft inside inebriated with the flavours of the broth. The tofu on the right is served in chicken soup broth with bean sprouts. It can be found in many places, including Maxiangxing.

Vegetarian

Luhao (芦蒿) Luhao is a green vegetable that is grown in freshwater lakes nearby. It is usually stir-fried and served on it’s own as a side dish or with toufu. Although some will say that it can only be found in Nanjing, the truth is that it can be found in other cities in China as well. However, it is quite popular in Nanjing.
Stinky Tofu (Chou Doufu, 臭豆腐) Stinky Tofu is Tofu that is marinated in brine and allowed to ferment for several days. How long it ferments for, what the brine is made out of and the type and texture of tofu are all factors that affect the end product. It is possible to have different tasting toufu just as there are different varieties and strengths of cheeses. Because of this variety, many cities in China each count stinky tofu as one of their unique specialties. It is usually served with hot sauce but can also be served with other toppings. Note: in the picture on the right, it is served with pork. Stinky Tofu can be found at street vendors, restaurants, grocery stores.
Five Fragrance Egg (Wuxiang Jidan, 五香鸡蛋) A nutritious snack, five fragrance egg is an egg boiled in a broth composed of anise, cinnamon, ginger, other herbs and sometimes tea leaves. It is left to simmer in the broth for hours. Five Fragrance Eggs can be found in convenience stores and grocery stores. However, eggs as flavourful as the home-made ones in the picture can be harder to find.
Zhuangyuan Beans (Zhuangyuan Dou, 状元豆) Zhuangyuan Beans are not only a Nanjing specialty but are even specifically called a Confucius Temple (夫子庙) specialty. These are large beans that are baked with various types of seasoning. There are many flavours, some of which are a bit over the top so ask for a sample before buying so as to assure you get a flavour that you like. Zhuangyuan Beans can be bought at specialty hole-in-the-wall vendors as well as grocery stores.

A great place to sample many of Nanjing’s specialty foods all at once is Wanqinglou in Confucius Temple.

Himalaya Nepalese & Indian Restaurant is one of my favorite Indian restaurant in Nanjing, it`s at the left corner of area, a little bit hard to find but it`s get so crowed every night.

When you entered the restaurants, you feel like at Indian, they have 2 floors, all the tables, foo-tangs, lights all the decoration are look like Indian style. On the wall they have many pictures token from Nepal when the boss traveled there years ago.

The have 2 Nepal local chief cooking there, so the food at the restaurant is so traditional that`s the reason why many people likes there.

Mochou Road Church (Christian)

Originally constructed nearly 400 years ago, Mochou Road Church is the oldest Catholic Cathedral in Nanjing and one of the municipal cultural relics. It is said that the church was built by an Italian churchman who was considered “the forerunner to promoting cultural exchanges between east and west”. During the Northern Expedition War in 1927 the church was seriously damaged. The Kuomintang spent ￥150,000 in 1928 to rebuild it. Its facade is relatively plain, but the vault framework and the 10th Century Romanesque decoration inside leave a lasting and positive impression.

What can you find on Lions Bridge?

- Treats - Try some bubble tea, ice and fruit (baobing), or candied fruit on a stick.

- Meatier snacks - Try the soup dumpling place or the locally popular Xinjiang meat on a stick joint.

- Xinjiang Food - For cheap Xinjiang noodles, take a walk down one of the smaller alleys.

- Pizza - For some interesting Chinese style pizza, consider the roast duck pizza at Aloha.

- Sichuan Food - Give King’s Town a try.

- Huaiyang Chinese Food - Try Nanjing Da Paidang for a tasty selection of Nanjing-influenced Chinese food.

- Korean Food - There are several Korean restaurants on Lion’s Bridge as well as another popular locale on the seventh floor of Suning (苏宁) department store just across Hunan Road.

- Thai - The Thai restaurant is very popular among the foreign crowd in Nanjing.

- Indian - Punjabi is another favourite with foreigners.

- Boring Fast Food - Of course, there are some homogenous competitors encroaching in. If you want to try something totally uninteresting go to KFC or Pizza Hut or even walk down towards the western end of Hunan Road to the McDonalds.

How To Get There

Lion’s Bridge is located between Hunan Road and Hubei Road. To reach Lion’s Bridge via subway, get off at the Xuanwu Men station and walk west down Hunan Road for about 5 minutes. Cabs are typically parked at both ends of Lion’s Bridge.

Nanjing Food Court (Nanjing Da Paidang)

I was impressed by the distinctive local features of this restaurant. As you approach the entrance, two elderly male hosts wearing white mandarin jackets, white round dicers, and towels on their right shoulder enthusiastically direct you inside. Upon entering, you will be surprised by the expansive hall and its old-fashioned, yet tasteful decoration. The first floor is more of a dining hall with tables that seat 4 to 12 guests. The second floor alternatively offers small, private rooms. The rooms are more comfortable and offer a better viewing angle of the first floor through the wooden windows, but you have to pay spend a minimum of 200 yuan (including alcohol and beverage) in order to obtain a room.

The cuisine served at the ’food court’ is traditional Huaiyang Chinese dishes. To me, the flavor here simply makes my mouth water. The first time I dined at the food court, two guests and I ate for 190 yuan. The second time 7 of us compiled a bill of more than 500 yuan, so the average expense works out to about 60-70 yuan per person. One last detail well worth a mention is the inclusion of a daily Suzhou Pingtan performance (storytelling and ballad singing in Suzhou dialect), which begins at 7 o’clock. Credit cards are accepted here as well.

City Wall (Admission: 45CNY) - Nanjing City Wall, constructed during the Yuan and Ming Dynasties between 1365 and 1386, originally stretched over 30km which made it the longest city wall in the world. Now, with about two thirds of the wall still intact it still remains the longest city wall in China. We could walk on the city wall and feel the history of Nanjing.

Relaxing Hot Spring Tour at Tangshan Area

Nanjing Tangshan is famous for the hot spring, hot spring is good for your skin and health, and relaxing your body and get rid of the press.

Maybe you don't like all the tourist attractions in the downtown, here would be one of another option.

This tour will be only visit 2 attractions and the rest will be spend the whole time in the hot spring. Or, if you prefer, you can only go for the spring.

Tour plan would be:

Hotel pick up -----> Yangshan Stele -----> Tangshan Ancient Ape Man Caves -----> Hot Spring -----> Send back to hotel.

Nanjing nightlife tours - Bar crawling

In recent years Nanjing’s nightlife scene has undoubtedly changed for the better. The 1912 bar district is a common place to start a tour of Nanjing’s nightlife as it features Nanjing’s largest concentration of bars and clubs. Besides 1912, bars, pubs, clubs, karaokes, restaurants and not-so-mentionable locales are dispersed across the city, especially near Xinjiekou and close to the student population.

Nail Jazz Bar is a light bar with good Jazz muisc, live sometimes, they have over 50 kinds of imported beer from all over the World, the Draft beer Hoegaarden is with special roam and taste, for lady, here have over 100 cocktail to choose, lovely and enjoyable. The price here is quite as other bars, short cocktail for 28 Yuan, long drink cocktail for 38 Yuan. Hoegaarden draft beer, 38 for 0.3L and 68 for 0.5L.

Behind the Wall - A cozy atmosphere, decent food, live music and cheap margaritas make Behind the Wall a popular hang-out, especially with the foreign student population. Inside, Behind the Wall’s three rooms are linked by over-sized arched doorways, and provide seating for groups of two to ten. Mexican, Latin and Greek cuisine is served. The drink menu is varied and not too expensive by Nanjing standards - margaritas are served for only 15 Yuan from Sunday to Thursday.

Castle Bar - Castle Bar is lively on weekends and can become packed during special events. However, during weekdays staff members often outnumber customers. A good place if you like dancing.

Secco Restaurant and Bar - Great German restaurant and bar in Nanjing, they have a good rang and selection of cocktail made by a German, he is also the manager there, really strict to every cocktail he made, always bring you the best taste.

Finnegans Wake - A traditional Irish bar in Nanjing,offering Kilkenny, Guinness and strongbow cider on draught.
