Jingxing Street is a very old street which records the history and changes of Kuming city, and of course exhibits the daily life of local people.Large number and variety of flowers and birds and many other delicate stuffs makes here a shopping paradise for both local people and visitors.Unfortunately, most old buildings in Jingxing Street are going to be pull down and replaced by tall buildings. It's very sad that people will not see the old things any more in the future. You'd never miss Jingxing Street if you are in Kunming now.

Yunnan University Hotel is strategically located in one of the better areas of Kunming for travelers. Located in the Yunnan University Foreign Language Center right next to Yunnan University, the hotel is right down the road from many of the better restaurants, cafes, and bars in Kunming as well as a 5 minute walk to Green Lake Park. The hotel is not the nicest place to stay in Kunming but the rooms it offers are perhaps the best deal you can find. A room with 2 beds, private bathroom with bathtub, and tv goes for 100 RMB per night. You will not be able to find a better deal for a room like that in an area of town that you would actually want to stay in. Next door is another Yunnan University Hotel that has recently been renovated and offers nicer, more expensive rooms.

Dongchuan Red Land is located in the town of Xintian, 40km southwest of Kunming City, near the milepost named “Flower Stone”. The area covering over hundreds of square meters is the most concentrated, typical and unique red land on the Yunnan red land tableland. Besides the red land in Rio de Janeiro, the spectacular red land of Dongchuan is healed the most magnificent red land in the world. Comparing to red land in Brazil, the scenery here is even more beautiful.
Heading to the north from Kunming, you’ll be always on rugged winding roads. Overlooked from mountains, white plain formed by debris flows will be in your visual field. Dongchuan has been healed “the museum of debris flows”. You can never imagine such amazing scenery without having been to Dongchuan.
Dongchuan Red Land
Because of the humid and worm climate, the iron elements in the soil have been depositing year by year after oxidation, and then the glaring color is formed after centuries. Dongchuan has also been called “natural copper capital” since the ancient time. Glaring red land, green vegetable plot, unique shape and beautiful figure are set off by the blue sky, white cloud and capricious ligh, which is the whole dream-like picture is just like the colorful paintings, making you feel dizzy.
Reputedly, the discovery of Dongchuan Red Land should be owed to a photographer. He saw the spectacular gorgeous red land when he was passing by plane. Then he went to Dongchuan lots of times to search the red land area. Finally, the amazing land was found by him. As soon as his photos were seen by people, countless tourists went there and worked up much enthusiasm and passion of the land.
Every attraction here has its own specialty in different seasons and time. You could choose the place and time according to your own fancy. You could get good photos at every scenic here. Besides, according to the natives, the red land looks bright-colored and gorgeous after rain. I also found it is a little dim and dull in the morning and much better in the evening. In a word, the beautiful scenery is far beyond description of words. Dongchuan Red Land was selected as the Top Undiscovered China Attractions

The Bamboo Temple (Qiongzhu Si) is one of Kunming’s most famous temples. Originally built during the Tang Dynasty, the Bamboo Temple was rebuilt in the 15th century, and restored in the late 19th century by Li Guangxiu, a master sculptor from Sichuan. Li Guangxiu and his apprentices were commissioned to build 500 luohan, life-size clay statues of famous monks and "saints" of Chinese Buddhism. The statues are known for their stunning realism and surrealism. The hall housing most of these statues is closed to visitors, but if the temple is not crowded you might get lucky enough to sneak a peak.
How to get there: The Bamboo Temple is located on Yu’an Mountain, approximately 12 km northwest of Kunming. Minibuses departing from the train station cost 3 RMB but are not on fixed schedules. A taxi from downtown will cost 30 - 40 RMB.

With a history of more than 1200 years, Yuantong Temple (Yuantong Si) is one of Kunming’s most active Buddhist temples. Many people gather here to participate in Buddhist ceremonies on the 1st and 15th of each lunar month, as it is one of the most important Buddhist sites in the Kunming area. At least part of the historical importance of the temple stems from briefly housing a tooth of the Buddha in 1956.
Yuantong Temple displays typical Chinese Buddhist architecture, but contrary to most Chinese Buddhist temples the halls are visited in order on a downward slope.
There are vegetarian restaurants both on the premises and across the street.
How to get there: Yuantong Temple is located on Yuantong Jie near the Kunming Zoo. Bus 101 can take you to the temple from the train station. Otherwise, take a taxi for around 10 RMB.

With haggling shoppers and indignant store owners, the Bird and Flower Market is your typical Chinese market scene. As its name suggests, shoppers might find it possible to purchase both flowers and birds here, but these are by no means the specialties of the market. One can find a wide array of knick knacks, souvenirs, weapons, fish, turtles, rodents, dogs, and more. However, be warned: the antiques and many other items sold at the Bird & Flower Market are fake.
A popular souvenir from Yunnan is a water pipe that locals use to smoke tobacco. These pipes come in different sizes and are made of either metal or wood. If you are looking to get your hands on one of these, the Bird and Flower Market is a good option.
A trip to the Bird and Flower Market can easily provide travelers that have a very limited amount of time to spend in Yunnan with some treasures from Kunming to bring back to your loved ones at home. Come prepared to haggle - negotiating will often result in paying less than 50% of the asking price.
How to get there: The Bird & Flower Market is located between the city center and Renmin Zhong Lu. Bus number 1 will drop you off about a 5 minute walk northeast of the market if you get off on Renmin Zhong Lu. Walk a few blocks west until you see a small park (grassy area with old people hanging out) on the south side of the street. Turn left and walk south down one of the streets and you will run directly into the market. When you see the dogs you know you have reached the north end of the market. One can also reach the Bird & Flower Market from the south on Nanping Jie. Walk a block or two west of the Carrefour on Nanping Jie, turn right and walk another block or two and you are there.

Dynamic Yunnan is a fusion of traditional ethnic folk music and modern dance .It draws from Yunnan's rich legends and cultural traditions to express the struggles and aspirations of the human condition. It's an attempt to create a living museum where colorful folk music traditons in Yunnan can live on for future generations. It's created and choreographed by the most outstanding dancer and stage artist in China ---Yang liping. She has traveled to some of Yunan's most remote regions in search of the elements of song and dance to create this performance that are fundamentally representative of this unique place. And 95% of the performers are Yunnan minorities people, presenting the charms of those ancient races. It's really a classic work and a feast for your ears and eyes.

Kunming is not world famous for its zoo. The zoo is probably what one would consider a "standard Chinese zoo" and comes outfitted with all of the required amenities, including lots of steel bars, cages, and of course, concrete. There are a few nice parts of the zoo, especially the undeveloped area, and it might make a nice sunny afternoon if you can handle the borderline animal cruelty. If parents with younger children are running out of ideas, a family might also enjoy the zoo. Be advised though, it is rumored that a Chinese child was mauled to death by a tiger from one of the shows at the zoo last year. The author is not aware of the current status, but as of recently people were welcome to take photographs with some of the big cats (for a fee of course) at the zoo with little safety precautions taken.
How to get there: The Kunming City Zoo is between Yuantong Dong Lu and Yuantong Jie near Yuantong Temple, not too far from Yunnan University. Tell a taxi driver "Kunming Dongwu Yuan."
