Grandma's Kitchen
This author admittedly despises Western cuisine in China for its lack of authenticity. However, he is glad to report that Grandma’s Kitchen has finally provided him with a place that truly reminds him of home. The first bite of a club sandwich with properly buttered bread immediately transports you to your favorite deli. The restaurant’s ambience is reminscient of a New England seaside cafe with quaint furnishings. Sandwiches are Y15-25 with entrees ranging from Y40-120.
Directions: 73/75 Kehua Beilu. The restaurant is south of the intersection of the first ring road (yihuan, 一环路) and Kehua Beilu.

Grandma's Kitchen Ain't What It Used to Be
Grandma's Kitchen used to be the best Western restaurant in China. The menu was chock full of home recipes and Texas-style dishes that were unique in China as well as authentic, hardy, and delicious.But the new owners have ruined it. They've turned it into just another run-of-the-mill Chinese “Western” restaurant.
It no longer has the homestyle cuisine or the Texas items on the menu, and the quality of the meals has seriously declined.
The breakfast I had recently was very disappointing. Instead of real breakfast sausage like the old Grandma's used to serve, they now serve hotdogs which they lie about on the menu by calling "breakfast sausage". Do they think expats are so stupid we don't know our own food? And they no longer serve real home fries or hash browns. They serve these frozen potato-based oily triangles.
My breakfast was missing the biscuit as well the explanation as to why it was missing. Though when i complained, the staff did take care of me with a slice of apple pie, which is still delicious.
If you crave Western food in China, Grandma's will give you as good a fix as any standard "Western" restaurant in China. But if you remember the old Grandma's, avoid this place and avoid the disappointment. It ain't what it used to be.
