Tianmen Mountain, is approved to be National Forest Park in 1992, has an elevation of 1518.6 meters. It is only 8 kilometers far from the downtown and is one of the most representative natural sceneries of Zhangjiajie. For a long time, Tianmen Mountain not only attracts the attention of the people by its miraculous and unique geographic landform and unparalleled natural landscape, but also well known for its profound cultural connotations and famous colorful humanistic sites. It is revered as the soul of culture and spirit of Zhangjiajie, China.

Tianmen Tongtian Avenue (Avenue toward Heaven)
Tongtian Avenue has 99 turns symbolizing that Heaven has nine palaces. It has a well-deserved reputation-a wonder highway of the world. Through Tongtian Avenue, one reaches directly the Tianti - celestial ladder from the top of which a celestial-like scene comes into view.

There are altogether nine hundred and ninety-nine steps in the Tianti (a vocabulary originated from Daoism, comparable to heaven in Christianity) which runs to the Heaven Gate. It is also the religious site for praying for happiness.

There is a 6-meter wide avenue specially built for this scenic spot. Tourists can make a self-drive trip from the foot of the mountain to the middle station of the cable car, and then they can transfer to the eco-coach to reach the final destination via this avenue.

Tianmen Mountain Cableway

Tianmen Cave

Tianmen Cave is the natural water-eroded cave with the highest elevation in the world. In the year 263(the sixth year of Wuyong Period of Three Kingdoms), the thousand-meter high cliff of Songliang Mountain suddenly broke open into a door-like cave which became a rare wonder of the world. Hence Songliang Mountain is change to Tianmen Mountain. Tianmen Cave runs south-northward with a height of 131.5 meters, a width of 57meters and a depth of 60 meters. It rises above the ground and nears the sky with a lofty and towering posture. The shadow of it reaches the north of the vast sea, the clouds over it near the south of the handle of the Dipper. It's much like a gate towards the heaven. The wonder attracted the visits and appreciations by emperors, officials, sages, hermits, dignitaries and men of letters of different dynasties. After the accumulation over the dynasties, the unique profound Culture of Heaven is built up. In 1999, the masters of international stunt flying piloted the planes to fly through Tianmen Cave. The activity gave rising to sensational reactions in the world. There were 800 million audiences watching the live telecast.

Tianmen Mountain Temple
Tianmen Mountain Temple was first built in the Tang Dynasty as a center of Buddhism in the area of western Hunan. The present Tianmen Mountain Temple is rebuilt on the basis of the original site with a plot area of more than 10,000 sqm. It adopts an official style of the Qing Dynasty and the buildings in the Temple compare well with the famous classical houses at home. The Temple is located in the mountain hollow with a broad vision. If one gazes into the southeast, all the hills seem to be so small that the Temple is really like an overlord.

Heavenly Gate Mountain Temple is nestled in a natural hollow in the mountain ridge, providing a modicum of lee from the seasonally raw winds. Since the temple structure is large while all of the surrounding trees are dwarfs (bonsai-sized, though not the potted plant size that fits on your window ledge), it is as if the temple, by its very size relative to its surroundings, achieves its fitting position of symbolic dominance in the mountaintop's larger metaphysical scheme of things. Standing well apart from the temple is a pagoda that you should definitely visit, but which can only be accessed from Heavenly Gate Mountain Temple, either on foot (an arduous climb of 45 minutes!) or via a (ski) chair lift, which will set you back about 25 Yuan.

To those who may be on the lookout for a completely different kind of culture here at the temple (think: yoghurt, i.e., food), the temple operates a vegetarian restaurant that lets you fill your plate for a mere 35 Yuan, and the fare is said to be so tasty that you'll hardly notice that it lacks amino acid, i.e., the building block of red meat.

Back on the road after a filling meal, take care not to take the wrong turn, else you will soon be back at the upper gondola stop near Yunmeng Fairy Summit. Instead, look around for the trail that leads over to the southeastern face of the mountain (you might want to consult your compass), to Yu Hu Peak.

Being one of the tree parts of Wulingyuan Scenic Area, Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is the first national park of China which was approved by the State Council in 1982. Located in the northwest of Wulingyuan District, Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is in the neighborhood of Suoxiyu Scenic Spot and Tianzi Mountain.
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park

With a total area of 72,000 acres, Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is covered with rich plants which have 98 families, 517 species, over twice the total in Europe.Its gymnosperm species take up half of the total in the world.

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is famous for its unique peaks, tranquil water and beautiful green forests. Its main scenic spots include the Golden Whip Stream, the Yellow Stone Village(Huangshi Fort or Huangshizhai), Yaozi Fort( Yaozizhai) and so on. Here, numerous pinnacles rise abruptly from the level ground in the shape of huge bamboo shoots pointing to the sky.

Yellow Stone Village

The Yellow Stone Village is one if the five classiac tourist routes in Wulingyuan Scenic Area. It's 1090 meters above sea level. It provides the largest collection of marvelous spectacles and also provides the larges sightseeing terrace in Zhangjiajie. Hence, there is a saying: It can't be said that you have been to Zhangjiajie without visiting the Yellow Stone Village.

Golden Whip Stream

Named after the 380-meter high Golden Whip Rock, the Golden Whip Stream meanders 7.5 kilometers which flows in a beautiful canyon between steep grotesque peaks and luxuriant trees. There are meandering streams, crystal-clear waterfalls, exotic plants, rare animals. No wonder it is called "the most beautiful valley in the world" and "the most poetic stream".

Yaozi Fork

Yaozi Fort faces the Yellow Stone Village. It's one of the three important scenic spots in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. The path has been rebuilt well in Yaozi Fort, although less tourists of group tour visit there, it’s a best place for trekking tour.

Yuanjiajie Scenic Spot

Located in the north part of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Yuanjiajie is one of the classic tour routes in Zhangjiajie.Yuanjiajie is a natural platform that faces giant rocks rising from deep valleys and surrounded by higher mountains. Situated in the south border of Yuanjiajie Scenic Spot, the natural stone bridge flies between the two great stone peaks. Mihun Stage

Hidden in southeast part of Yuanjiajie Scenic Spot, Mihun Stage is one of the best platform to get sight of the sceneries. Standing here for overlooking, you can see many unique stone peaks stand in a deep canyon. Some stone peaks look like soldiers gethering. Staying here for breath taking, one's soul would be fascinated by the carmful and beatiful scenery to throw into the deep canyon.

Back Garden

Back Gaeden is located in the south part of Yuanjiajie Scenic Spot. Lots of strange stone peaks stand there like woods, and some green trees grows on the stone peaks. If it's after raining and the stone peaks are surrounded by mists and clouds, a beautiful Chinese painting will be clearly got your sight. Standing there for sightseeing, what a beautiful bonsai garden it is!

Avatar Hallelujha Mountain

The peak is formerly named the South Sky Pillar which is 1,074 meters above the sea level and one of more than 3,000 mountains in the Yuanjiajie Scenic Spot. In 2008, Hollywood photographers spent four days shooting Zhangjiajie. His pictures became the prototypes for many elements in "Avatar". The pictures inspired the movie director James Cameron to feature the floating "Mt. Hallelujah" in the world of "Pandora". In 2009, the peak renamed Avatar Hallelujha Mountain.

Tianzi Mountain
Tianzi means "the Son of Heaven". The name of "Tianzi Mountain" came from the story about Xiang Dakun, a famous leader of Tujia Ethnic in the early Ming Dynasty(1368-1644). It was said that Mr Xiang Dakun led the local people to fight against the government officials, he called himself "Tianzi", and local people called him "King Xiang". So the mountain had been calling "Tianzi Mountain" since that time.

Tianzi Mountain is one of the four scenic spots in Wulingyuan Scenic Area.It's surrounded by Suoxi Vally on the east, Sangzhi County on the north, Zhangjiajie National Forest Park on the south.With an area of 67 square kilometers, Tianzi Mountain lies on the highest point of Golden "Triangle". The landscape in Tianzi Mountain is natural and primeval. There is nothing artificial in the area. There is a saying that "people who have visited Tianzi Mountain wouldn't climb any other mountains" and It can not be said that "you have been to Wulingyuan without reaching Tianzi Mountain".

He Long Park

Located in Tianzi Mountain, He Long Park was founded in 1986. He Long, born in Sangzhi County in 1896, was one of the ten Marshals of the People's Republic of China. Tianzi Mountain was one of the places where He Long once led his army to fight in 1930s. The Statue of He Long stands in the park in order to let more people to konw and remember Marshal He Long.

West Sea

Situated in the west of Suoxiyu Valley, the West Sea is a basin-like landform with a collection of peaks and woods. In this "sea", numerous peaks stand with different shapes and poses, covered with lush vegetation. Therefore, it is called "sea of trees" and "sea of peaks". In spring or summer or a clear day immediately after a rain in autumn, the clouds are surging and rolling like waves, covering the whole sky and earth. The view is so magnificent that it is called "sea of clouds". The combination of the three seas is the characteristic of West Sea. In it, Gate to Heaven and Sky Terrace are wonderful scenes.

Yubi Feng

Standing side by side with different height, the three rock peaks look like China's writing brushes. It was said that the three writing brushes were once used by King Xiang. So, the scenic site is named the Emperor's Writing Brushes Peak( Yubifeng in Chinese). The Emperor's Writing Brushes Peak is the symbol scenic site in Zhangjiajie.

Fairy Lady Strewing Flowers

As the legend goes, King Xiang jumped down at the high cliff in Tianzi Mountain afer his army failed at the last battle in Baizhang Gorge (the entrance to drive from Zhangjiajie City to Wulingyuan). One of Tujia Lady was deep sorrow when she got the bad news. And she hurried up to Tianzi Mountain to look for the hero of Tujia Nationality. She took a basket of flowers and stood there to welcome her hero. Time went day by day, she couldn’t look for King Xiang. Because of being deep sorrow, she became stone statue at last.
